What is a Class 5 Hitch?

A class 5 hitch  is a trailer hitch built to haul extremely large equipment, such as campers, horse trailers and big boats. This kind of hitch typically has a 2 or 2 ½-inch receiver opening and can only be installed on the frame of a heavy duty vehicle. When towing cargo that might be heavier than a class 5 hitch can handle, consider installing a gooseneck or fifth wheel hitch instead to properly distribute weight.

Class 5 hitch rating

  • Holds a gross trailer weight of up to 12,000 pounds
  • Carries a tongue weight of up to 1,200 pounds
  • Installed on heavy duty SUVs and pickup trucks or large cargo vans
