Whether you bought a pair of jeans that needs a length adjustment to fit you perfectly or you're planning to save a little on your kids' jeans by buying pairs they can grow into, you can customize the length easily at home by hemming them. It's easy for even a beginner to sew a hem. If you're hemming jeans for your kids, you can just let out the stitching as they get taller to add extra length.
What you'll need:
Step 1: Roll jeans to the right length.
Have the wearer put on the pants and roll a cuff into the leg until they reach the right length. Use your ruler to measure from the bottom of the fold to the bottom of the original hem, so you will always know how much you need to cuff the pants before sewing.
Step 2: Pin.
Go around and pin the new hem in place so that it is sturdy and won't move during the sewing process. Do this for both legs.
Step 3: Turn pants inside out.
This will give you the visibility you need to make a precise, straight hem.
Step 4: Measure fold.
With the jeans removed and laying out flat, measure the fold to make sure that the pins haven't shifted.
Step 5: Stitch.
With your sewing machine, sew along your desired line. Periodically check to make sure that the fold is even and measured correctly.
Step 6: Check the length.
Have the wearer try on the jeans again and check to see if the new length is correct. If not, use a seam ripper to remove the hem and measure the new hem once more before sewing again.
