Wondering About WeMo? Your Top Three Questions Answered

by Doug Bonderud

Have you ever wanted to switch your lights on and off from your smart phone, or wished you had a motion detector in your home that sent messages every time a specific event occurred? It sounds like science fiction, but it's already for sale: the WeMo. Made by Belkin, the Wemo brand covers a family of products that automate your home while giving you total control.

What exactly is it, and how does it work?

Talking about "home automation" and "Wi-Fi connectivity" makes it seem complicated, but Belkin's solution is simple: You get a bundle that includes one WeMo light switch and motion sensor. Once installed, the switch lets you turn lights (or anything else you want to plug in) on and off from anywhere in your house by using your home wireless connection. The motion sensor can be set to turn lights on when someone passes by, or to run your lights according to a timer. For example, you could make a rule that automatically turns on a hallway light between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m., or create a rule for the motion sensor that turns on the living room lamp when you come home after work.

Is it easy to use?

Lots of home technology products talk about being "easy," but come with textbook-thick instruction manuals filled with complicated jargon. Not the WeMo. You need three things to make it work: an outlet, a smartphone with the WeMo app installed and a wireless network. That's it. Just plug in the light switch or motion detector, then open the application on your smart phone. Provide your wireless network name and password and it's ready to go. Want to easily connect more switches and sensors? Let the app store your Wi-Fi information, and every new WeMo you install will be up and running automatically.

What can I do from my smart phone?

Once you've got the device up and running, you've got a world of choices. From your smart phone, you can control any connected lights or devices or set up rules to automatically turn them on and off. Bottom line? Using your smartphone gives you total control over everything the Belkin device does.

Looking for home automation made simple? Consider Belkin's WeMo line. It's useful, easy to install and gives you total control in the palm of your hand.
