There are three birthstones for December: zircon, tanzanite and turquoise.
Zircon comes in colorless, yellow-green, red, brown, blue and green shades and is mainly mined in New South Wales, Australia. The radiant color of blue zircon is created when golden brown or yellow zircon is heated to a certain temperature. This technique of applying heat was discovered in the 1920s.
Tanzanite, a lovely purplish-blue gem that's similar in appearance to the aquamarine, was discovered in 1967 in the Mererani Hills of Tanzania. Since its discovery, the tanzanite has become one of the most coveted gemstones worldwide.
The last and probably most notable birthstone for December is turquoise. Turquoise is unmistakable with its opaque blue-green hue. This gemstone is commonly imitated in fashion jewelry because designers love the unique stone but want to cut costs. Mined in the American Southwest, turquoise is particularly popular in those regions and contrasts beautifully with the desert shades of orange and tan.
