How to Clean a Blu-Ray Disc

Whether it's new or mainstays in your collection, a Blu-ray disc gets dirty from time to time. Even the slightest amount of smudges or dust can make a Blu-ray player struggle to read it. Fortunately, cleaning your disc is easy and will have it working like new in no time. Here are some simples steps for cleaning a Blu-ray disc.

What you'll need:

  • Microfiber cloth - This type of cloth is light and doesn't leave behind a lot of lint or dust.
  • Tap water (optional) - Tap water can come in handy for difficult smudges.

Step 1: Wipe Down the Disc

Take your microfiber cloth, and using outward strokes from the center to the edge, wipe down the entire disc. Blu-ray discs are a bit stronger than a standard DVD so you can use more pressure to get out tough smudges.

Step 2 (optional): Use Tap Water to Wipe Down the Disc

For a disc that is extremely dirty, you can use tap water in conjunction with your cloth to wipe down your disc. Don't use anything stronger than tap water or you'll risk damaging the disc's coating. After you've wiped it down, use the dry part of the cloth to dry the disc.

Step 3: Test the Disc

Put your disc into your Blu-ray player, and test to see if it is back in working order. If necessary, repeat steps 1 and 2 until your movie plays smoothly once again.
