Keep your Engine Temperature Steady with an Engine Thermostat

Keeping your engine at an stable operating temperature is the job of your engine thermostat. Most thermostats open at the 180 degrees F and let coolant flow to the radiator. Limiting how much coolant reaches the engine lets it heat up quickly, which in turn helps it perform at its best and reduces the quantity of harmful emissions that are released.

When you plan to replacing the thermostat, you should also change the small thermostat housing and gasket. The gasket will need to be changed to match the new thermostat. Sears has plenty of gaskets and housings to fit your replacement thermostat. There are also O-rings that will go around the end of the radiator hose. These small parts will ensure that the seals are tight, and that there is little loss of pressure within the system.

A thermostat can malfunction and get stuck in either the closed or open position. When the car thermostat is stuck in the open position it will immediately allow the coolant to flow into the radiator. This keeps the engine from reaching its peak temperature and can greatly reduce engine efficiency. If your car thermostat refuses to open, your engine will be in danger of overheating. Grab a new engine thermostat from Sears to keep your cooling system in top shape.
