Replace Old or Worn Out Brake Parts

Every driver knows what role the brakes play in their driving experience. But not everyone knows how to spot the risks before their brakes give out on them while they're on the road. Every part has the potential to wear out completely, including brake lines, pads and drums. Malfunction of any of these components can lead to brake fade or failure, which can have disastrous consequences. Make sure you know how to check for worn components, or have your vehicle regularly inspected by an automotive specialist.

One of the most obvious signs that your brakes have begun to wear down is a high-pitched screeching sound when braking. This sound is produced by a metal shim, known as an indicator, which produces an audible warning that the brake pads need to be replaced. If you hear this sound only occasionally, it may be the result of a thin layer of rust or dirt on the brake rotors, which does not require replacement of the pads. If you hear this sound regularly, however, it's time to get your brakes checked.

Another warning sign to look for is your vehicle pulling to one side while you are braking. This could simply be the result of your car tires not being aligned properly, but it can also mean that your brake linings are wearing unevenly. If that's the case, you may need to have a brake adjustment performed on your car. Such uneven pulling can also be caused by foreign matter in your brake fluid, which requires that the fluid be drained and replaced.

Braking trouble doesn't necessarily always indicate an issue with the brakes. If your car, truck or suv tires have been worn down enough, you may not have enough traction to brake effectively and efficiently. While the tread of your tires probably won't impact your vehicle's braking distance in dry conditions on smooth pavement, problems can arise if you're driving on slick or uneven surfaces. If you're having trouble braking, especially in wetter conditions, be sure to check out your tires to make sure they're in perfect working order.
