A DAC is a Digital-to-Analog Converter, is an electronic processor inside digital media players that converts digital audio information into an analog audio signal that can be sent to headphones, tv, mobile phones and tablet. It is needed to convert the digital signal to analog to drive an earphone or loudspeaker amplifier in order to produce sound (analog air pressure waves). DACs are commonly used in music players to convert digital data streams into analog audio signals. It is ideal for interfacing between modern digital audio/video devices with analog amplifiers or self-powered speakers. The simplest way to get a digital audio signal to an external DAC is via the USB port on your computer, but one can also get a digital feed from the optical and coaxial outputs -- also known as SPDiF connections -- found on CD or DVD players, MAC computers, home theater/stereo receivers, Digital TVs, HDTVs, Blu-Ray, Apple TV, Google TV, Satellite/Cable receivers and DVRs, TiVO. Major game consoles such as PS3, PS4 and XBOX 360 (Slim), and other streaming audio gadgets of all kinds. They are also used in televisions and mobile phones to convert digital video data into analog video signals which connect to the screen drivers to display monochrome or color images.
