A microwave with inverter technology relies on inverters as the main power supply instead of magnetic coils or transformers. In microwaves which utilize coils or transformers, if you select 50% power, the microwave will actually use 100% power and switch on and off throughout the cook time to average out to 50%. Inverter technology operates steadily at 50% power throughout the cook time, so energy is distributed consistently and foods are cooked more evenly. Consistent heat distribution also allows you to defrost foods without cooking the edges. Inverter technology is only available to the Panasonic and GE brands.
