What is a High-Efficiency Washer?

A high-efficiency (HE) washer is a newer and more efficient version of the traditional top-load washer. While they tend to be a little more expensive than conventional top-load washers, they also save you money on utility bills by using less water and electricity.

Because they don't have an agitator inside the wash basket, HE washers tend to have more room inside for laundry and are more likely to be able to accommodate large items like comforters, blankets and small rugs. Keep in mind you will need to use detergent specifically made for HE washers; using regular detergent in a HE machine can create too many suds, interfere with the cleaning process and lead to residue buildup. In addition, a HE washer also spins at higher speeds than a conventional top-load washer, which means it removes more moisture so your clothes need less time in the dryer.

Benefits of using a high-efficiency washer

  • Saves money on electricity and water bills
  • Reduces your carbon footprint
  • Accommodates larger garments
  • Removes more moisture from wet clothes, so they spend less time in the dryer
