The Best Coat for Your Body

by Jill Manoff

We have the same style mantra every winter: Stay warm without sacrificing our style—or forgetting the rules of what works on our figure. This year is no exception. The one difference? Finally, the big trends are among the most flattering. We’ve got your coat-shopping guide.

Your Best Bet:
A single-breasted coat. (With a deep V-neck, narrow lapel, tapered waist and shoulder pads? Even better!) Double-breasted styles and coats with high necklines draw the eye up and add inches to your bust.

Your Best Bet:
Cinched-waist coats with a fitted top and slightly-flared, or A-line, bottom. Broad lapels and embellishments above the waist also make for a more balanced look.

Your Best Bet:
A slim-fit peacoat with sharp tailoring. Slightly-textured fabrics and embellished collars will add interest without adding bulk. Want more options? Remember: Any empire-cut style with an above-the-knee hemline works.

Your Best Bet:
A fuss-free (avoid “extras,” like epaulettes and patch pockets) A-line style, or car coat, in a streamlined fabric. Tip: Pairing a bright version with dark neutrals is super-slimming and so chic!
