The Biggest (+ Most Wearable!) Beauty Trends of Fall 2013

by Jill Manoff

We admit it: During “fashion month,” we’re totally distracted. Now that a number of runway shows are live-streamed, we’re constantly referring to our computers—not only to eye the trends we’ll be wearing, but also to see what beauty tricks to start practicing. From new ‘dos to the season’s hot lip, there are inevitably a number of looks we can’t wait to perfect—and Fall 2013 was no exception. If all goes according to plan, these are the trends we’ll be flaunting, come fall....

Beauty Trends of Fall 2013

There are three hair looks that ruled the runways and, thankfully, each is easy to master. Braids were big, worn every which way—from French and Dutch to wrapped like a crown. Far from braid-savvy? You’re in luck: The traditional, three-strand style was every bit as popular. Ponytails were also a mane event—worn messy, sleek or with a bunch of bouncy volume. The secret to getting the trend just right? Wear them low, near your neck—and wrap a piece of hair around the elastic. Finally, you’ll want to invest in a good flatiron. Straight hair is a must—parted down the middle, or with a deep side part.

The good news? The beauty rule you’ve been abiding by for years still applies: Go big on eyes, go big on lips—but never both. Choose statement eyes? You’ve got a few options: Sweep on “cateye” liner in any color, or top your lids with shadow in orange, purple or gray. Opt for a standout pout? Simply apply a lip stain in wine or rich red. Finally, shine is out in favor of matte. Translation: You can skip the sparkle and wet-look gloss.

Love nail art? You’re not alone: For fall, designers perpetuated the trend by styling their lineups with high-interest tips—think studded, laced and crystal-embellished. And then there were those creatives who preferred to go deep; oxblood-red was clearly a trend as was black, in every incarnation imaginable (French tips, bold prints, the list goes on). Like to change it up? Take a shine to metallics, too. We saw gold, silver and gunmetal polish, so—whichever you paint on—you can’t go wrong.
