Dare to Bare: Work a Crop Top

by Jill Manoff

The crop top is cropping up everywhere this season, and it’s a trend we love—that is, when styed to a T. There are two rules for wearing it to keep the end result current, and far from “Britney Spears” territory. We’ve got your how-to.

Do pair it with high-waisted bottoms.
Start with a fuss-free crop top (Pick a style with a classic neckline, and avoid lots of embellishments. Its abbreviated length is a statement in itself.)—then add trousers, skinnies or a second-skin skirt with a waistband that sits above your bellybutton. The result? An of-the-moment look that will work for brunch, date night—most anywhere but work.

Don’t pair it with low-waisted bottoms.
The trend is surprisingly easy to pull off because it doesn’t require abs of steel. It’s all about showing just a sliver of skin at one of the slimmest parts of your body: your midriff. Bare any more than two inches of belly, and you’ll appear outdated. So, completing the look with your low-rise jeans? Definitely not an option.
