The craftsman 1.5 ton jack is the best jack I've ever owned! May 01, 2009

I bought this jack to replace my 90+ pound steel jack and was very happy with it.  I say was because I lent it to a friend the other day, he jacked his truck up on a slant without chocking the wheels, mangled the jack and gave it back to sears without asking me.

I had it for around 6 years and beat the snot out of it.  I drug it through the dirt, gravel, left it outside all the time until the red parts were a super faint pink, and the jack always performed flawlessly.

I only have one complaint; they don't make this model any more!  If anybody who has been unsatisfied with theirs wants to send it my way I'll gladly take it off your hands.  I don't look forward to having to shell out $230 to get the current model craftsman jack I like!

Leaky - Not Very Safe February 15, 2010

Several years ago, my brother bought me this jack as a Christmas gift.  The jack looked nice, was light enough, pumped/lifted quickly.  It worked fine for a while, then started leaking.  Strictly speaking, I suppose, it still "works", but it's leaking very badly now, which can't be safe.  A seal just isn't sealing.  If the hydraulic pressure lets go suddenly through a rapid fluid loss while the jack is supporting something, the jack could collapse bringing down whatever is held up by the jack.  I always use jack stands as back ups to a jack, rather than leaving any jack as the primary means of support..

I'm looking into rebuilding it.  Anyone done this themselves?  Is is as simple as a ram seal?

Most of the reviews here are negative.  Is there enough here to warrant a safety recall?

    Cons:
poorly made,U joint was junk, small part cost more than the Jack

U joint in the jack broke, went to buy a replacement part and Sears wanted over $150.00 for it which was more than the jack itself cost. Last Craftsman floor jack I will ever buy!!!!!

    looking for durability

Don't trust it if it's made in china like this one October 19, 2009

    Pros:
    quick jack feature
    Cons:
    poorly made

my Cranftsman 50240 jack leaks becuse it was made overseas by someone that doesn't care.  I tried fixing it by changing the O-ring as someone else had suggested online but the hole the O-ring seals against is so roughly machined that it still won't seal.  I could have drilled a cleaner hole at home with a hand drill.  A shame that the Craftsman has sold out it's reputation to make a buck.

    Pros:
Low minimum height,Good lifting height,Not too heavy,Decent price
    Cons:
Guaranteed to leak, but can easily fix

It is very easy to fix the leaky Craftsman #50240 floor jack yourself at home, which has served me well at home and at the racetrack despite the leak.  You will need an 11mm Allen wrench and a 12mm socket, and always wear eye protection.  Remove the 2 bolts that hold the handle on the frame with the 11mm Allen wrench.  Remove the bolt that holds the retaining tab for the pressure release valve with the 12mm socket (near the U-joint shaft).  Unscrew and remove the PRV, but be careful, as some oil will spray out and there is a steel ball that might shoot out (make sure that the steel ball stays in the bore below the PRV; if it comes out, then just clean it and drop it back in place).  Replace the rubber O-ring that is on the PRV (use one that is slightly thicker, if possible; just go to a hardware store), oil it a bit, and reassemble everything.  Add jack fluid, if necessary.  DO NOT remove the screws for the jack adjustments.  Repairing at home will cost you less than $1 and 30 minutes at the most.  I don't work for Sears or Craftsman, nor do I typically perform jack repair.  But, take your jack to a professional if you are not familiar with this type of equipment.
