Great router at a great price
Background I use a router in some fashion on every single piece of wood I cut. It is very close in the running to the most used tool in my shop, with a slight advantage to the table saw. I just replaced an 8 year old craftsman 2hp router that finally went to tool heaven. That router owed me nothing. It was extremely used, and perhaps overused. For what I put that ?cheap? router through, it had no business even turning on for the past 4 years. I also have a Porter Cable 7518. That router scares the crap out of me. Every time I turn it on I swear I can hear it say ?I?m going to kill you today!!?. It is mounted in a table and it will stay there for life. This thing is a shaper disguised as a router, and that is what I use it for. I?m sure people use them free hand, but I?m too big of a **** to do so. I also have a small Dewalt trim/laminate router that tends to the very light duty stuff. I needed a good, moderately strong router that I can feel comfortable using by hand. I like to do edge profiling by hand, not in a table. I also cut rabbets, stopped dadoes, T&G, dovetails, etc with a hand held router The Router At 135.00$ on sale, I couldn?t even get within 100$ of this price for an equivalent. It?s rated at 2.5hp, and realistically I would say it is a solid 2.25hp. Not too shabby. I know people like to say craftsman sucks because of their proprietary crap. but this works fine in my PC dovetail jig. The guide bushings were 11.00 for the set. Also the bushings are user serviceable. another big plus, and the cord is detachable. Kit It comes with a pretty good kit. A nice soft case I actually use. It also includes 1/4? collet, collet wrench, over table height adjustment wrench, dust extraction hoods for both bases (that work!), chip shields, and an edge guide that I have yet to try so I cannot comment on. Base(s) There is both a plunge and fixed base, both of great quality. The height adjustment on both is very easy. A button/slide for coarse adjustment, and a knob for fine (1/64?) adjustment. My only complaint is in the fixed base, you have to un-clamp the base to adjust the height. When you clamp, it moves slightly. This is second nature to me because my other craftsman was the same. I instinctively adjust a tad bit short to account for this, but I figured I would call it out in the review. The adjustment on the fixed base can be performed over the table if it is mounted in a table with the included wrench. The plunge base its smooth. Awesome height adjustment as well. There is a dial for coarse adjustment in 1?8? increments. This is so awesome when cutting deep grooves in many passes. Set the final height properly, then turn the dial stop on the bottom to take shallower cuts. Changing bases is done without tools in seconds. I know some of the other craftsman routers have negative reviews regarding height adjustment and I see why. They have gears on the bases that move them up and down. I can totally see that getting jammed with dust. This router does not have that at all. User experience Soft start is nice. No torque twist. It?s also not a screamer. I always thought LED work lights were a gimmick, but I must say they are appreciated. I also like the ?hot tool? indicator next to the removable power cord. The power is all there. I have yet to have an issue where I need more power in a handheld application. I haven?t used panel raising bits, but that is what the 7518 is for. The Electronic feedback is nice and actually does work. I?ve intentionally tried to bog the router by feeding a little too aggressively and it keeps up. Did I mention it had electronic feedback? Find that in a router costing 135$. It?s a little on the heavy side, but I prefer that. I would rather concentrate putting thrust against the fence I am using rather than trying to keep the router from climb cutting. Dislikes More like minor annoyances. I don?t like the location of the power switch. It?s at the top of the motor and in the middle. I like it to be near the handle. I guess with the soft start, we can call it even. Not an issue for me, but the included base plate will only fit a bit 1 1/4? in diameter. I see a lot of complaints about that, so again i wanted to call it out. My feeling is twofold: 1 ? If you are using a bit that big, put it in a table 2 ? If you can?t figure out how to drill out a piece of lexan, maybe a 2.5hp router with a bit bigger than 1.25? isn?t a good thing for you to be handling. I wish the bag had better provisions for collet wrench, extra collet, and edge guide storage. There is just one big pocket with no dividers . Speed adjustment. It?s a 1-9 system. I wish it had actual RPM like the PC does. I use the included chart in the manual.

Needs a better baseplate

I would give this more stars, but I had to re-manufacture the base plate.  The opeing is only 1.25 inches.  Many  of the router bits that do 1/2 or more won't fit.  These are the router bits that you BUY a 2.5hp router for.

Works well, but so much for online help.

So now that I've used it, I'll add my other comments. They said my post above wasn't approved, but was passed along to customer service. The unit is very smooth. A much better unit than my previous 1.5 hp router. I am using the plastic baseplate from my old router which has a larger opening for larger bits. Kind of ridiculous, because it's all of a 1.25" diameter. This unit is not as heavy as the stats would indicate; that's the packing weight. The speed is settable, but once you start up, that's the speed. The separating bases are very convenient, especially if you want to change bits while attached to a router table. There's a learning curve to adjusting the depth, but once you're used to it, it's pretty good. I complained in a previous post about the plastic baseplate and trying to deal with customer service, but apparently, they wouldn't post it because it didn't meet standards. Note: no foul language was included. Hmmm. Overall, I really like this router.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Surprisingly Great...at first

I'm rewriting this review changing 5 starts to 1 star. I was initially sold on the price with all the bells and whistles in spite of the fact that the 1/2 inch collet was extremely tight. In my router table: The motor base started to move around in spite of adjusting and tightening (yes I know how to use in a table). This is very unsettling as the guard on my table was what kept it from literally flying up at one point, ultimately scratching the motor as it turned from the vibration. Plunge base: I tried for hours to get a straight cut in my dado jig to no avail. How do I know it is not user error versus the router. Well I used my other top brand router (yellow) had no problems whatsoever. I have learned my lesson not to stray from the tried and true. My last ditch effort at trying craftsman. You really do get what you pay for.

Frustrated Out-Of-The-Box!

Pulled it out of the box and the 1/2" collet is so tight I can't even get a bit in it rendering the entire unit useless! I called Sears Repair & Service. They can't just send me a new 1/2" collet assembly which only costs $10 online. I have to drive the router up to a Sears repair shop 45 minutes away. I think I'm done with Sears Craftsman! PLUS, the little button you have to push to lock the cylinder and tighten/loosen the collet is a total pain. I had the predecessor router to this one. Used it for 7 years and had no issues. Bring back the 2 wrenches. That's SO much easier than trying to push a button with one hand and using a wrench in the other. I ordered this online because I had such a great experience with my last Craftsman router. I really wish I had taken the time to physically go into the store to look at this unit. I wouldn't recommend this unit to anyone and I haven't even powered it up yet!!!

First router - and very impressed

I wanted some capacity to learn various techniques with a router, and to have some headroom in the way of power...this fits the bill perfectly. I have only done a few very simple fixed base operations with it, but it's been easy to use and I am very happy with my choice. I even like the look of it...it's very 'industrial design' in appearance, and it all goes together beautifully. The documentation is very good, and the carry case is very functional.

My craftsmen 21/2 HP plunge/combo router

I had the fixed base 1/2 inch 2.5 HP craftsmen router and needed the plunge router for making barn doors for my workshop. Very good price and well built, it even has more amps then my previous 2.5 HP router. The progressive spin up to full power ovoids the jolt that instant full speed gives.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Excellent Router

This was my first router purchase ever. So far I love it. Cuts with ease and is very powerful! Like that it comes with a bag that carries the router and both bases for easy storage. The led light is handy. Only thing that seems as a down side is the opening of the base doenst fit bigger bits but you can easily fix that.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

A lot of machine regardless of the price

I have owned and used a LOT of routers over the last 50 years. About a year ago, I picked this one up thinking, "Well, I'm here at Sears, and my 1/2inch machine has been really giving me some trouble, so I'll go ahead and pick up this one for now, and get a good one later on. To my astonishment, it has (and does) perform better than ALL of the much more expensive ones I have owned, and I have owned all the "big name" brands. It's smoother running, the soft start and stop is excellent, it doesn't run hot, it doesn't make me ware hearing protection needed for a cannon, its heavy enough for the really tough jobs but agile enough that I don't find myself swapping to my 1/4inch router nearly so often. It comes with a lot of extras you don't get with other brands (like alternate bases, a tote bag (very well made as well), a line fence and pad blanks. So if you have been thinking about a replacement, I would recommend you give this one a spin.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Overall
A very good router for the cost.

I have this router, except I also have the D-Handle base with it, that is no longer avilable, which is a pity. Each other base, fixed or plunge, can be used with a router table, as both have above the table adjustment by a screw head in the base. The only fault, and the reason it received four out of five wrenches from me, is the location of the power switch. It should have been placed over a handle, so you could reach it with both hands on the handles. However, if you have the D-Handle base, you won't care, as you use the trigger with it.

If you intend to use this on a router table, either use a 3/8" thick poly plate, or a 1/4" aluminum one, as the weight will make the 1/4" thick plastic plates sag over time.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
