    Gets the job done April 03, 2011

    We recently bought this air compressor for immediate use on a car repair. It certainly got the job done and worked great. It's very easy to use and easy to move. I think it will do fine for the kind of small to medium household and automotive projects that we typically tackle. It did have to refill a few times too many for my liking, but we knew it would do that when we chose it over the next size up. We were on a tight budget with an unexpected car problem when we bought this one. I do plan to purchase a bigger, more powerful compressor in the future, but I'm in no hurry since this one is certainly adequate enough for now.

    Multiple Issues right out of the box December 31, 2010

    I spent a pretty good bit of time reviewing air compressors before making this purchase. I liked this one for capacity (20 gal), direct drive, and portability. I also liked the fact that it had two connection points and adjustments for air pressure levels. I had read in the reviews that it was going to be a little loud, but it's a tool, so I wasn't concerned about the noise level. Heck, it's really not a lot louder than our vacuum cleaner, and you have to be right on top of it to use it. So, after much review and vacillating back and forth, and even increasing the dollar amount that I had set for myself to spend on this item, I went with this unit. I got it home and was eager to try it out, so when I got it out of the carton, I noticed immediately that the front "foot" that it sits on opposite of the wheels was bent, making it wobble. No biggie, I thought. I have plenty of hammers to straighten that out with once I've found out that it's a keeper. I decided that before I had it fully pressurized, I'd test out the drain valve, since the instructions say that you're supposed to drain off any condensation via the drain valve daily. When I went to open the drain valve, it would only make about 1/8 of a turn. Not wanting to break it, I left it alone and made another mental note. I finally got it plugged in, and after a bit of fiddling around with the on/off switch, it finally started to fill...and fill, and fill, and fill. It took a long time to fill up, but I thought, "how many times am I going to have to fill it completely up? It's not like it's going to leak down every day". Fully pressurized, it seemed like all would be fine. I played with it a little, then put my new toy aside for the night, leaving it somewhat fully pressurized. At about 2AM, I was startled by something in my sleep, and once I could finally gather my thoughts, I realized that I'd left the unit's on/off switch turned on, and ultimately realized that the unit, among all of its other flaws, also had a slow leak, and had reached its low pressure level and started to refill. I'm sorry to say, but that was the final nail in the coffin for this purchase. The Sears staff were very friendly with the return and actually seemed empathetic towards the problem.

    This is the second one of these compressors that I bought. The first one grenaded after 20 months of use. The bearing in the end of the motor housing failed, allowing the fan to contact the housing, causing the keyway on the cooling fan to shear and lock up in the fan housing. I repair my own equipment, but found that single replacement component parts for this unit are not available, only the whole motor/pump assembly for $250 plus shipping. I decided to buy a complete new compressor instead. This new one had the same problem with the key in the plastic fan shearing after ONE WEEK! I bought a new fan online for $14 and it worked fine after that. Today the motor has failed, just loping along at a low rpm before popping the circuit breaker on the motor. I am a former Manufacturing Engineer who knows what quality materials and manufacturing methods are, and this piece of equipment is definately not an example of such. I am disgusted that Sears would continue to sell such a poor quality product. I am saddened that the once highly respected, high quality Craftsman line has sunk to such an unacceptable level.

    1st one burned up in than less 5 minutes, it tripped a 20 amp breaker and blue smoke came out of the electric motor. Sears was happy to take it back and give exchange it for a new one. 2nd one worked fine but, the regulator is so small that it could not supply enough air to turn a 1/2 inch impact wrench. To top it off, 1 hour later the air hose ruptured.
