a rubik cube to put together
This is the hardest lawn mower to put together and get to run that I can imagine. I tried for a day by myself, then two neighbors came over to help (one is an engineer), we still couldn't get it to run. I then returned the machine to sears, where a helpful employee showed me the tricks that were involved.

Great lawn mower

This is my first self-propelled lawn mower and I must say that I am very pleased with the purchase. Part of my yard has a bit of an incline to it, so the self propelled feature really helps in getting the lawn mower up the hill. I took it out of the box, assembled it in less than 10 minutes, added oil and gas and it started on the first pull. I hope this mower proves to be a handy tool for years to come.

Powerful Mower

So far this has been a great mower. Starts on the first pull every time. Simple height adjustment. Has plenty of power to pull the mower even in our steep ditches. It does take a little bit of time to get used to the "My Stride " feature.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good Overall

Fairly easy to assemble. My only assembly gripe would be putting the grass catcher bag on the frame. Would it really have been that hard to ship a bag already put together? Started 1st pull out of the box. Unit is complete, minus gas of course. Handle assembly is kind flimsy, it mounts in plastic on the deck and there is no reinforcement bar about half way up the handle just above the bag(i.e. think ladder-like). Love the MyStride self propel, and the fact that it's rear wheel drive. I tend to walk pretty fast and this mower keeps up with me easily. The black metal blade clutch bar could use a soft/foam cover as it can pinch hands if one is not careful. Engine seems powerful enough to handle most everything I have thrown at it so far. This mower seems of average weight considering it's dimensions, and the fact that it is self propelled. Lots of plastic on this model. The black plastic MySride trim piece under the red self propel handle LOOKS nice but wants to come off all the time, and is made of extremely flimsy plastic. I may remove it completely if it becomes a problem. Bagging is average. It catches grass, but I have yet to remove the bag where it is packed full. Probably better to empty the catcher more often as grass tends to spill out a bit. This is due to the leading edge that sticks out where the chute on the mower deck connects to the grass catcher. The catcher itself had two pins that stick straight out to hold the bag securely on the mower. Unfortunately, if you use paper lawn waste bags, these can be cumbersome and in the way depending how you dump clippings into the waste bags. Also, the chute area under the door tends to accumulate clippings that must be dug out from around the door hinge, and next to a weird protrusion/shelf. I assume this is the cover for the self propel mechanism, but its unusual design allows clippings to spill out of the bag and accumulate on one side of it. I have not mulched or side discharged with this mower yet, so I am unable to address the effectiveness of either feature. Used this most of the summer and one pull starts every time. I noticed when I first got it, there was a white puff of smoke that would always happen on start up. Chalked it up to engine break in as it seemed to diminish over a period of weeks. Then I started it a few days ago and sizable cloud belched from the exhaust....a little concerning. Overall, I'm pleased with this mower, more than satisfied, just a few minor gripes mentioned above. I rate this a 'very good' based on the overall value. Got it for just under $300 on sale, so as long as I can get 5-10 years out of it, I think I will have gotten my money's worth. A solid value and decent performer, especially if purchased at a sale price.

Great, but I'm surprised about some things

Replaced my 13 year old Craftsman with this one. I went over a stump last year and it was never the same and seized / damaged main bearing (?). This one was on sale and reviews seemed good. The stride feature was very strange at first. It actually hurt a bit. However, after the 2nd cut I go the hand placement right and have to say, it's a great feature. My old self propelled sometimes pulled me, or when full went too slow. This one, no problem. Time as always will be the real judge, and that is my concern. The metal housing seems light and thin. Many plastic parts, and more cables to break. Also, angle on the fuel tank refill cap is strange. Still not sure about why I would use the oil drain plug vs. tipping it and draining through the dip stick. I did the 1st change after 6 hours of use and the tip method worked fine. Bottom line, good mower if you can catch it on sale for low $300s.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Not Perfect but Close

Bought this about a month ago to replace a hard startingToro Personel Pace. Used it about 4 times now so here is the review. 1. Assembly was NOT difficult as others have stated. Yes the bag needs to be assembled but be patient and it will make sense. Add provided oil and fresh gas and it will start easily first or second pull with NO priming. 2. My lawn is not very large and is pretty flat so cannot talk about hills etc but on my lawn the power was more than adequate and the "My Stride" feature worked good not great (My old Toro's "Personal Pace" feature was better). 3. I agree with other reviewers about the oil drain being hard to use but how often does the average user change the oil anyway? It can be done just a little messy. 4. The angled gas cap is another head scratcher. Doesn't make it harder to fill for me but looks unusual. 5. They call this a Craftsman engine. It is NOT a Briggs & Stratten nor is it a Honda. It is an engine I think used by Yardman and MTD lawn mowers. There is an MTD sticker on the engine. Question is who and where does MTD get their engines? It is an overhead valve with what they call "auto choke" which means no primming. 6. All new engines should start easily as my Toro did for several years. This one starts easily as well but only time will tell. I think one thing that will help the starting issue over the long haul is proper care and storage as stated in the manual 7. On some models they offer a bagging system that is easier to use because the rear "flap" stays open when you empty the bag which makes it much easier to reinstall the bag. This mower DOES NOT have this feature. Not a deal breaker however for me even though you must bend down and pull up the flap to reinstall the bag as in most mowers on the market. 8. This mower has a one handle height adjuster which raises and lowers all wheel at the same time. This is a nice feature if you change the cutting height often. Im surprised I dont see this feature on Toro or Honda mowers 9. In summary I like this mower and would buy again. Now the question is how long it lasts.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

works great

I have been researching all wheel and rear wheel drive lawn mowers for my yard. At my age I have problems mowing some of the steeper areas of my lawn. I bought this to replace a craftsman front wheel drive mower. This works great. Nothing to pout together than tighten a few screws add oil and gas. Easy to maneuver. Good price. Quality workmanship.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good and Bad

Just bought this mower yesterday to replace a a Craftsman push mower that died only after two years. I was reluctant to buy another Craftsman, but the My Stride appealed to me. Do not pay any attention to the review that states it takes two neighbors, one being an engineer, to put this together. The bag is annoying because the instructions are not clear. How hard would it have been for Sears to have included a bag that didn't need to be put together? However, if you take a few moments to look at pictures you can figure out how to put it together. Sears did include a bottle of oil to start you of with, which was nice. After putting it all together, and adding gas and oil, it started on the first pull. I took it for a spin and tried out the mower on my front yard. The My Stride is admittedly not just a marketing ploy. It really works as advertised and it didn't take long to get used to. I wish I could say the catcher bag worked as well, but it didn't. For some reason the grass would get clogged up at the opening into the bag. As someone else mentioned in their review, the opening for the gas is angled, instead of vertical like on every other mower. I also think this is a stupid design and certainly makes filling the tank a bit more challenging. At this point I rate this mower at 3 1/2. If it last longer than my last Craftsman it will be a solid 4. Because of a few design flaws that will make owning this mower a bit annoying, it will never realistically be a 5 star mower.

rear wheel drive mower, does not start on first pull like some mowers, but usually on 2nd or 3rd pull. Cuts grass fine. Easy to dump grass collector. Adjusts all 4 wheels at once for depth of cut, nice feature.
