    I had an old Craftsman mower that basically fell apart. This one is better quality, and much less vibration. I also tried a John Deere, but it's safety cutout switch on the seat rendered it unusable--on 2 different machines. Their customer service, or tech support was no help. A couple of suggestions for improvement, 1. the pull wire on the back so you can push the mower, needs to be much more substantial. 2. The mower deck should be the thicker guage metal. 3. It needs a hose washer port for the deck. Other than that, I use it very heavily in a harsh environment, and so far it is doing well. Satisfied. I would have bought the Professional version, but Sears does not offer it in a CA model. This sould be more clear on the seb site.

    I can find only the California model of this machine on the web site now, so that's where I'm putting my review, even though my machine was purchased in Idaho and delivered to Washington. I bought the DYS 4500 about a year ago to replace an aging MTD 14-horse mower with a 42" deck. I will refer to the performance of that machine in evaluating this one. I got the DYS 4500 because it had the features I most need: hydrostatic transmission, so I can creep under my fruit trees without getting my head scraped; 4 guage wheels, so it won't scalp my hillocky, hummocky lawn as much as the MTD did; a tight turning radius and a narrow 42" deck, to navigate through my tree- and shrub-invested yard; and mulching capability. With 24 horsepower, the DYS 4500 is ludicrously overpowered for a machine that is designed to do little more than cut your grass. Still, I'm as fond of big motors as the next guy, so what the heck? This twin-cylinder engine runs a little more smoothly and quietly than the MTD's B&S. The transmission works smoothly and is a joy; I can easily go as slow as I want. The combination mowing/mulching blade neither mows nor mulches as well as the dual-blade mulching set-up of the MTD. If the grass is at all thick, this mower invariably leaves clumps of partially-mulched grass, where the MTD leaves a fine, evenly distributed film of mulch. On the other hand, the deck can be converted from mulch to discharge without being removed--an advantage over the MTD. I routinely drive my lawn tractors up, down, and across steep and irregular slopes, using it in ways that are expressly forbidden in the owner's manual, for such is the nature of my yard. The DYS 4500 handles this fairly well, but its frame is stiffer than the MTD's, so that it sometimes loses traction in places where the MTD would simply flex to keep its tires on the ground. A differential lock would be a great addition to this machine. All in all, I am pleased with the machine. My only real beef is that it doesn't mow particularly well, but that seems to be a function of the blade design. I would also be happier if more attachments were compatible with it; it certainly has enough power to handle much beefier attachments than Sears provides for it. I'll keep using it instead of trying to refurbish my MTD because of the hydrostatic transmission, the most important feature for me after basic functionality.

    Here are my initial impressions of the DYS 4500. Home delivery took 3 days from order (as promised). Delivered on a Sunday, so a $25 premium was charged. Sears informed me of the delivery time through automated phone messages. Tractor was packaged in a wood-reinforced cardboard crate. The two delivery men slid the crate (about 500 lbs) from the street into my garage, then left. Using a box-cutter, I removed the top piece of cardboard. Inside, on the tractor seat was the owner manual. Per instructions, I cut the cardboard along the dotted line on each side, and the crate sides separated easily. The tractor was actually black rather than the gold color as stated in the catalog. (I'd rather have black anyway) The challenge was the crate base. Boards parallel to the axle prevented movement of the tractor, and the instructions didn't indicate how to remove them. I ended-up cutting these boards with a circular saw, permitting the wheels to move. Once uncrated, there was really no set-up or assembly required. I filled the tank (regular gas), then started the engine with one of the two keys supplied. The engine started immediately without any problem. Subsequent starts required a few seconds with the choke pulled-out, but no other starting problems. A dash-located lever sets the engine speed, and the right foot pedal engages the transmission (automatic). A separate right foot pedal, closer to the seat, engages the reverse gear. There is also a meter on the dash showing the hours of engine running (displays tenths of an hour). Before the transmission will work, it must be enabled. There is a small lever called the "free wheel control" next to the rear hitch, which resembles a wire coat-hanger. It does not look anything like the instructions show. Pushing in on this lever enables the trans. I'm planning to use the tractor to move horse feed (hay and bagged grain), so I also purchased the 500 lb capacity steel cart. I don't plan to use the mower part, so I may remove it. The owner manual contains instructions on how to remove it, and it doesn't appear to be too hard to do. As a first test, I hitched-up the cart, loaded it with four 50lb sacks of grain, then proceeded up a 50 foot 15 to 20 degree gravel slope path. The tractor performed perfectly--no tire slipping and no engine straining--plenty of power to do even more. I then moved a bale of hay, with the same positive results. There seemed to be no perceptible shifting of the auto-trans while going up hills even though the catalog says there are 6 gears. Speed over level ground and up hills is somewhere around 10 miles per hour. About golf-cart speed and more than adequate. Engine volume level is about the same as a regular lawn mower. Quality of construction appears to be fully adequate, with no obvious problems. Over all, I am very satisfied with this tractor and recommend it to others.
