    Craftsman 26 hp 54 in. Deck, DGS 6500 Garden Tractor is Awesome! July 06, 2009

    Craftsman 26 hp (Briggs) 54 in. Deck, DGS 6500 Garden Tractor  is simply awesome.  I have a two (2) acre tract of land that I live on which is relatively flat with very nice grass.  The DGS 6500 provides a nice even cut with great mobility.  I also have a 120 acre farm located in central WV that is in no way level.  The property has approximately 30 acres of fields which I maintain.  When I first purchased the property, the fields had not been cut for about 2 years.  I cut it with this machine with no problem at all!  The grass, weeds, small trees were over the machine and it just plowed right through them.  I highly recommend!!

    With reservations - Augmented 10 year old Sears manual shift with 42" deck. Terrain - slight slope with undulations Pros At 14 hours on the engine, the engine starts easily runs well. Steers well. Generally produces a clean level cut. Comfortable, but high seating. Cons Any change in operator position causes the engine to stop or cut out. speed in reverse is glacial. speed in reverse with a trailer is slower. We tow with the old tractor now. I mow at position 6, the edge of the deck regularly gouges chunks out of the lawn where the soil isn't uniformly at the same level across the length of the deck.

    Pros:
    Even Cut,Powerful

    We have an older version of this tractor. (2008) We absolutely love it! It used to take us and our neighbor hours to mow 3 acres and the trails on the back 9 acres. (gotta love our neighbors for all of their help) Now we can mow everything our selves. (giving the neighbor more time for his own yard) We have a large hill on our property and this mower goes up the hill at an angle with ease. It does have some trouble going down the hill, though. It tends to "fall" the last half even in 1st gear. We have never overheated it or had belts slip,  problems we had with our last Toro lawn mower. The ride is very bouncy in the yard, but when mowing along the road it smooths out. So far we are very happy with this tractor.

    We have much larger tractors for haying several acre fields. I only mention this in an attempt to add credibility to what I am writing. I only needed this garden tractor for maintaining the lawn - so I thought. I was very surprised this little power horse was able to move a few boulders. So I chained it to a tree, ran the engine at the slowest possible RPM, and pulled. The 23 inch tires spun very slowly and the engine never hinted at stalling out. [ I used wheel weights and chains ] So now the mini work horse does the garden tilling, driveway grading and will be plowing snow. And yes, it does the lawn aeration, leaf sweeping and of course lawn mowing. It does everything except bail hay and it does it faster, better, and more comfortably than the larger tractors. The tractor only has 43 hours on it. On the other hand we have only had it for a month. My point - it has been put through the wringer and performed exceptionally well. Keep your oil changed - it will last forever.
