    Craftsman 299 pc Socket Set - Real World Value! March 13, 2011

    Much has already been said about this set, but here is my impression... Upon opening the box, it was (as stated by previous reviews) a bunch of plastic bags filled with sockets. Get ready for taking some time to sort and inventory everything! I laid them all out on the hardwood floor and put them in order, a table might have been easier, but they can't fall on the floor if you start there. First thought was WOW, there are a lot of sockets here, and I'm pretty sure there are some I'll never use, but hey, if I do need one, I know it will be there. All the pieces were present and in the correct quantity. The finish is very nice, and I didn't have any paint or serious markings, just a few light scuffs most likely caused by the sockets bouncing around in shipping. NOTE: there is no added packing in the box, so things shift around easily. I had only 2 minor issues with the set, the first was a couple of sockets were seriously jammed together (one stuck inside another), after working for several minutes to free them, I felt fortunate they weren't all scratch up. The second issue was one 1/2" / 9mm socket wouldn't lock on my ratchet. I tested them all while laid out on the floor, and 298 were fine. I will swap this out next time I'm at Sears. The sockets are machined and finished well, and I see no flash on the insides. Seriously, for the money you will not find a product even close to this quality. The sockets are Made In The USA, heavy duty, and warranteed for life. You would have to spend a lot more for the big name sockets, and for the last 5% fit and finish improvement, I can't see it for anyone but those that wrench every day. I expect to never need worry about sockets again with this set. Now I'm in search of the best way to organize this great set. I bought the set so I wouldn't have to piece together a set, and still be missing that one when you need it. Highly recommended, you won't be sorry.

    Value, however finish is horrible, flaking chrome, "cheap" April 03, 2011

    OK. First, I bought these for *almost* $1/socket. I paid $305.99 on sale w/ online coupons and Great deal.

    The smaller sockets were awesome. The issue is the larger 1/2" drive sockets. They were absolutely finished horribly. Brand new sockets with flaking chrome just falling off and splintering into your fingers. Some had rust already on the inside. A few came CRACKed on the inside of the socket.

    I called the Customer Service line given in the set and they shipped out some more. Great service. However the sockets were EVEN WORSE!!

    I know for $1/socket Made in the USA you can't complain. But I would gladly pay DOUBLE what Sears is asking for these things in order to get a more quality "old fashioned Craftsman" set of sockets. Unfortunately, the way it is now "Made in USA" is starting to mean "cheap crap". If you want a quality socket set, you need to look to something made in Taiwan.

    I really wanted to like this, but was severely disappointed. Maybe if Sears would offer a black oxcide finish, they could just do away with their cheap chroming altogether.

    I just got my set today, caught them on sale for 249.00 with free shipping, with tax a total of 263.00. What a value! Now on some of the larger sockets the finish is not as great as the smaller 1s . But hey, these r tools, not fine jewelry or show chrome on a custom bike! I'm going to use them, abuse them just like a tool should be used, they really need some more scuffs from me using them & they will get it! What a great value compared to the some of the other company's out there. Thanks again sears for coming through for us that seek value. At this price i don't have to worry about losing 1 or babying them like some of the more expensive tools i have. Keep the sales coming! These r going fill fill my craftsman stainless steel box very nicely. This socket set is a real value for someone that will use them !!!!!!!!

    I was looking for a complete tool set and decided after I saw this deal to piece a set together starting with the 299-piece easy read socket set. This is a great set. I have every socket I need to work on my Motorcycles and Cars with this set. The easy to read laser etched writing is great too. This is a great socket set if you're looking to piece together a set from scratch. The quality is what you come to expect from craftsman and if anything happens to any of the sockets I know I have Craftsman's Lifetime Warranty just in case. I couldn't be happier with my Craftsman 299-piece east to read socket set. Chris Houston, TX

    Thiis is an update. I bought this set a little over a year ago. It has been in my garage now for 8-9 months after sitting in my house for a few months getting it organized. Now some of the sockets, even with good chrome on the outside, are rusting all over the outside. Little specks of rust are appearing on the outside chrome. It's not on all the sockets, but maybe 10%-20% of them. I wish I could return the whole set and get my month back but I can't. The sockets sat in a tool box, in a garage. Most of the rusting sockets haven't even been used. I bought this set to last me for life but no way do I want to keep crappy rusted sockets in my tool box. I will exchange the ones that are the worst and put the set on **** to sell. What is disappointing is I actually liked the product at first - love the laser etching. I would've been willing to pay whatever they want for a product that is of good quality, but Sears/Danaher is making some crap product these days.

    The set arrived within 4 days but was missing the 3/8" X 9/16" deep socket, contacted Sears and was told that it would take 2-3 weeks to send missing part. The help was courteous but the response time leaves something to be desired. Still waiting 2 weeks later. Have seen comments about the quality of the chrome plating but my set is fine. The set skipped some sizes in the larger diameters that I will buy to fill in the set, for a few dollars more all the sockets sizes could have been consecutive. Some of the size etching is over the top of the stamped sizes making them somewhat hard to read, I realize that the process is done by machine but with today's OCR equipment this could be avoided. Over all an excellent buy, I watched this set for quite a while waiting for the price to come down ($320.00) before pulling the trigger. I'm waiting for the ratchets to go on sale so I can have a matching set, then all I have to do is figure out what to do with all my mismatched, poor quality, old sockets.
