My second 3/8 ratchet from Craftsman and not my last! April 12, 2011

First things first: this is a Made in the USA Craftsman tool, so you can expect about the best quality possible, especially for a $15 ratchet, for a 3/8in. driver.

That said, for the kinds of things you would use a 3/8in. driver, this ratchet is perfect. Small bolts, torqued not too high, maybe engine internals or well maintained and clean mechanical bolts on the outside of a motor or body of a car are good applications for this ratchet. Household applications are good as well. Perfect for my motorcycle too, and that thing is babied for sure.

If you're torquing things to the point that the handle hurts your hand, you need a cheater bar, or you really need to break bolts with it, you should seriously consider stepping up to a proper 1/2in. driver or a breaker bar. How you could think that a tiny 3/8in. driver ratchet could withstand a 24in. cheater bar and NOT break is beyond me. Expect the same result from small Snap-on ratchets too. Excessive force for a tool is just that - in excess. By definition of the term, too much force for the tool. Don't blame the manufacturer for a tool breaking when it's misused.

Use to be a good bran April 03, 2011

As a kid I remember helping my dad work on motorcycles and cars and handing him a good quality ratchet or wrench. Today in 2011 with sears being owned by kmart, there quality is no more.

I have bought a few box sets for working on cars or a emergency kit. The wratchet skip gears or just simply break. I hate to say it but the only thing they still make that is quality is screw drivers IMO. I am seriously taking a nice look at snap on if they do not start giving me QUALITY replacement ratchets.

Why should I travel a half hour to get a replacement that I turn around and break the first time I use it?

    Very sad to say.

Great tool in the toolbox. May 14, 2012

This thing is great! I needed a new ratchet for my toolbox since the cheap one that I had broke. I bought this one and it feels right. It doesn't feel cheap. I've been using it heavily on everything from Simple house items to bolts on my car. It haven't showed anything that it will break anytime soon. This is a great tool for a great price.

I like this rachet because I can tell the mode (On or Off) by looking at the lever.

NO LONGER MADE IN AMERICA??!!! May 05, 2012
    via user
    By veryangryamerican of Amelia, OH

So I went to trade in a 3/8 inch drive craftsman ratchet because the small release bearing was missing on my current one. I told the cashier the problem and he told me to grab one off the shelf and he would process the exchange, I matched the numbers on the handle of the ratchets and found the match , but it felt different, similar but different. I turned the ratchet over in my hand and saw that it was a Craftsman that was made in China, how appalling! I understand the cheap "evovle" garbage being made over seas because the lower price on "evolve" tools. But this was Craftsman, something that I gladly paid more for because I love my country and love the few companies that still provide manufacturing jobs to our own citizens in our own country. I am telling everyone I can about this, I don't think people realize it yet. Look at some of the items on the shelf and check for yourselves. I am asking everyone to complain to Sears in hopes that they will see the error of their ways and continue to produce American made products. I kept my ratchet with the faulty release mechanism because Sears could not offer me one that was equal to the one I have that has U.S.A. stamped in the handle.
