Super Sander, Get it on sale though! March 18, 2008

I hesitated after reading other reviews here, but now that I've sanded the varnish off a few hundred feet of Red Oak with it, I'm completely satisfied. It compares very well with more expensive belt sanders, but isn't nearly as heavy as the Porter-Cable or Dewalt in the similar amperage. The "tracking problems" with previous reviewers are certainly due to operator error. Belt tracking is VERY adjustable, and if you use the sander properly it is an outstanding system. Just a tiny little tweak of the adjustment knob and you're perfectly centered up. You can just run the sander, tweak the knob and get the belt exactly where you want it. If you don't know how to use a belt sander, then you'll have problems with belt tracking on ANY brand. The sanders aren't supposed to be moved sideways (under pressure) and that will pull the belt in one direction. Plus, if you're not doing a good job of keeping it flat against the surface, then it will pull. This is true of ANY brand. There is an excellent trigger lock on this, too. Very long cord, and a roomy case with storage for extra belts. Nice package altogether. It's overpriced above $85, though. Wait for one of the two or three sales a year and get it for $80. So, despite not being a Craftsman fan, I was fully convinced by this tool. If more of their stuff worked this well, I'd probably have others. This is the only Craftsman power tool I own.

    Doesn't track August 26, 2008

It isn't operator error as a few others have stated. I've been using belt sanders since I was in Junior High (long time ago) and this one just won't track properly. I've gone through more belts in 2 uses than the whole time I owned my last belt sander. There is a design flaw for sure. We'll see how cooperative Sears is in taking this thing back since I can't locate my reciept. I don't have a problem buying another Sears sander, but it won't be this model.

i have been a stair guy for 13 years, and this belt sander is the most terrible thing i have ever used , it never stays in track no matter what you do, if i put too much presure it sheredes the belt you cant even go side to side with it. and the bad thing about it is that my wife got for me like 2 and ahalf years ago and i just started to use it , i know they wont take it back now.
