    Great unit but watch out for the sharp points January 01, 2009

    I had read all the reviews for a cheaper 36-inch aerator that mostly said that unit was pretty fragile. So I opted for this unit, hoping it would be more sturdy. This was a Christmas gift, and I assembled it, but have not used it yet. It took me about one hour, 15 minutes to assemble. The assembly is pretty straight-forward. You have to be careful when assembling or moving this unit in that there are sharp points at the end of each triangle that is on a wheel and rotates into the ground . I am impressed with how solid this unit is. The unit by itself probably weighs some 50 pounds, and I think it can easily handle almost another 100 pounds on the built-in shelf at the top of the unit. The operation is pretty simple. Just move two pins to lower the pinwheel onto the ground. The sharp points will then make indentations in the ground, opening it up for seed, fertilzer and water. We have 2-1/4 acres of pasture with a couple of cows, and we are hopeful of using this unit to aerate the soil with lots of little holes, just before we appy better grass seed in the early spring. We then hope to periodically use the unit to aerate the soil just before we apply fertilizer on our lawns. I am glad that I opted up for this unit, even though it costs some $40 more than the cheaper one. It is solidly built and about $100 less than the next model up. The only drawback that I don't like about the unit is that there was no pin to link it to the tractor. Other than that, I am glad we got it and we are excited about using it in the spring.

    The aerator works ok. The ground is a lot harder here than in most places so had to put more weight on it. For softer ground it should work real good.
