    Craftsman 38cc 16' bar chain saw is a good value. April 06, 2011

    Chain saw works well and was completely assembled and the box contained the two cycle oil mix. However, you will need to buy oil for the chain. The chain tension feature simplifies/facilitates the adjustment of the chain. This feature allows you to quickly adjust the chain without any wrenches or pliers. I used the saw for three days without any problems. The saw has plenty of horsepower. Richard

    Craftsman 38 cc # 34 gas chain saw -- OK but not great May 05, 2011

    I got this model mostly because at 40/1 oil mixture is identical to my craftsman blower and I don't like having another gas can to manage -- other models were 50/1. I needed it for some basic pruning of trees and light work. Note I am a 1st time chain saw user.

    • Starting directions were clear and simple. However, I had to adjust the choke slightly inward to get it started. Took significant time,
    • Once started, it performed pretty well, however the chain has come off twice and I had to spend time, by trial and error to get in back on the bar.
    • The bar chain oil also has a tendency to leak and make things messy.

    Price was attractive, but you get what you pay for I presume.

    The Craftsman 16 inch chain saw is a good value, coming with: a tool free chain tensioner; air purge; and carrying case, all gor under $175. Craftsman quality, warranty and the availability of Sears parts and maintenance stores are an additional part of the value of this item.

    Bought this seeing all the other decent reviews and not expecting a Jonsered or Husquevarna for this price. But stihl (sic), lo and behold, out of the box it flat out it wouldn't start... combustion chamber not even getting a single drop of fuel. Cause? Fuel lines were reversed at the the primer bulb so the primer was putting pressure in totally the wrong direction and fuel lines stayed bone dry no matter how much I pressed the bulb (the fuel tank got nicely pressured though). So, I reversed the 2 line connections at the bulb and now it's getting fuel & the spark plug sparks... and it still won't start!!! I did see a small piece of black plastic fly out of the combustion chamber when trying to test the spark plug by pulling on the starter cord. Methinks I've got a lemon. But I expect things to start out of the box. I mean, how hard can it be to make a 2-cycle power tool? There was a time not so long ago when "Made in China" meant something. :)

    I buy tools only as I need them. After many years of not needing a chain saw, the need finally came when I had to cut down a dead tree in my yard. I may be many more years until I need it again, but now I have when I do. It was easy to start and use. The only problem was that the chain was toast by the time I finished cutting up the tree to haul away (it wasn't that big of a tree, so it seems like it should have lasted longer !), and it will have to be sharpened or replaced before the next use.. A good product with an excellent price results in a very good value that met my needs.

    I read all the review, Bought the gallon of bar oil one guy wished hed bought.I filled it up, pushed the primer bulb 5 times on the third pull it tried to start, went to half choke and it started on the second pull. 20 secs. later a blip on the throttle and it idled like a content kitty.
