Older Mantis VS This Tiller July 14, 2009

I rented an older Mantis locally to try it out first. Have to say I didn't like it. Kept hitting the off switch and shutting it off. Almost had to much power making it harder for me to control. Hit a rock and it bounced two feet into the air. Have to add that this was first time using one of these smaller tillers so maybe it was me. All the pushing and pulling made me out of breathe. I think it was a 1995 model so newer ones maybe better. Make sure shut off on handle is where you can't hit it with your hand when using. Craftmans was much better and easier for me. Shut-off positioned so I could not hit it and shut it off. Starting was easier once I learned the different method. Handled better with more control. Mantis also has a 4-cycle now, so it's maybe not fair to compare these two, but I think I made the right purchase. I've had it for about a month now so time will tell.

put in oil, gas, press 10x and take it back to the store it doesn't start!!!!! I have had trouble from the begining, I have many gas powered machines for my lawn and garden, but this is the worst. The recoil starter is part of the problem, now it seems to be a carberator also. I've had it, its going back!!! Please note when it does run it does a great job.

Being a female 62 years old, this little tiller is the tiller to use. It starts easily, and does a tremendous job. Lightweight enough that I can move it easily to any area of my 1/3 acre yard. I am tilling up a large area to level for an above ground pool..and this is much better than the standard size tillers. I bought it a few years ago..hasn't been started since last year, but started up easily. No breaking my back to start it. I highly recommend it.

Worth the money June 11, 2009

I bought this tiller a month ago after a misshipment date from UPS I finally received it 10 Days later. I will have to say what a tiller I have had a Murray which if not controlled would dig itself to China and I miss it but, now I have one that is even meaner. Who needs a big tiller when this thing just tears it up,easy start, plenty of power, the exhaust is not in your face and it does'nt weigh nothing. Worth my money!!!

Gotta read the manual June 11, 2009
    via bazaarvoice
    By TampaJim of Tampa, FL

Purchased this unit despite several reviews reporting starter failures. I had the same engine on a string trimmer with good results so I took a chance. Because so many people complained, I took the time to read the section on starting. There was a big caution note stating that the unit has a spring assist. It cautions to pull evenly without jerking - quite unlike other small engine starting routines. When I first started the engine, the difference became obvious. Rather than trying to accelerate the crankshaft by pulling hard, the starter cord winds the assist spring. Once enough tension is stored in the spring, it releases and turns the crank shaft. In use there is simply no connection between the cord and crankshaft. So yanking harder and harder as you might with a stubborn two cycle will only apply excessive wear and tear. Also, pumping the primer bulb does not inject gas into the carburater barrel. It simply pulls gas from the tank to the float chamber. Once you see gas returning to the tank via the blue line, your priming job is done. Enriching the mixture is done by closing the choke to the #3 position and cycling the starter several times. Moving the choke to #2 for the start allows air to mix with the gas you sucked in on #3. Two operational notes: The manual says to hold the throttle open when starting, The engine will rev high enough to engage the clutch diggin in the tines if you haven't held them off the ground. The other note has to due with the edger attachment. Unlike other edgers and this unit when operating as a cultivator, Edging performance is vastly improved by pulling the unit rather than pushing.
