    Craftsman 40" Dethatcher - Great price, awaiting results in yard May 02, 2011

    I have been looking for a detatcher for some time and have priced used ones. Sears recently had a lawn and garden sale and made the price of one of these the same as I was seeing for used ones.

    Setup took about an hour by myself. Relatively easy assembly.

    Saturday, I took it for it's innaugural spin, so to speak. Worked pretty well with only 6 red bricks for weights. As I've never used one before, I figured to go lightly at first. Works great behind my riding lawnmower, a Craftsman YS-4500 with the Intek Gold 20hp engine.

    Pros - easy to attach and pull, easy assembly, seems to work as advertised

    Cons - any change in the land (hills or dips) caused it to pull deeply and the tractor would strain to pull it

    Overall - seems to work as designed, awaiting to see if it really helps!

    Now that it's assembled and following my lawn tractor around the yard, it's GREAT!

    The instructions are over complicated and unclear. Better instructions would have gotten this a 5 star review from me.

    Buy this assembled, and you'll be happy with your purchase.

    You'll need 1" paver blocks, (one for each side),to use this effectively.

    Assembly was a bit time consuming, and some of the parts (6 brackets) could have been pre-assembled at the factory. But once assembled & adjusted the dethatcher worked like a charm. Would recommend dethaching your yard first, then cutting w/ a bagging system second. No bagging system, then you will definitely want to cut first, dethatch second and rake third.

    Bought it two years ago and it works great. I duct taped two 25 lb weights to it and it tears uip the old grass quite nicely with one pass. The unit doesn't have any problem with the extra weght

    It took a while to put together and carriage bolts where referred to as hex bolts in the directions. You have to put the weight in the back of the unit for it to work well. Once you do, it does a really nice job. Definately not a "take out of the box and go" accessory
