Much more durable than spiral e-z outs

I had a 2001 ExplorerLImited with the V-8.  Due to road salt, I broke off the spark plug in cyl #2.  I was really worried I'd have to end up pulling the head. There was nothing to bite into.  Got this style extractor, used some "freeze- spray" and tapped this in...nothing to lose right?

Waited one hour, tapped it again and tried to turn it.  Viola!  It began to back out.

Had never used this style before, but for bigger bolts, they are definitely more durable and since they have an "edge" to them, you actually drive it into the side wall of the bolt your removing so there is less slip. Highly Recommend!

Might be useful for a wood screw, but I doubt it
Do not expect this tool to extract any hardened bolt or anything set into solid metal. The tool is cast (iron, I guess), which makes it very brittle. Cast metal anything is not hardened. It is good for some applications I guess but applied torque is not among the benefits. It will break under any pressure at all. I ordered this set but knew immediately when I got it I cannot use it for the purpose I bought it for. I needed to remove stuck brake bleeder valves. I won't use this tool for that purpose: it will break off and cause me further grief. Waste of money for my purposes. Don't waste yours. And frankly, I doubt it would remove a stubborn wood screw without snapping. As for a wood screw, to use this product you will first need to drill a hole in the screw, and then tap the correct extractor tool into the hole, and then use a drill to extract the screw. Whereas you have the danger that the bit will break anyway. Oh, and be sure to wear goggles if you try that, since a small shard of metal CAN blind an eye. Bottom line, do not buy this product for any purpose. It's made of inferior material and is insufficient to almost any purpose. Trust me. Find a titanium tool that promises the same thing, if such a tool exists. I'll just give up and replace the part I was trying to fix. Cheaper in the long run.

Brittle

Had 3 broken 3/8 axle bolts to remove. Bought these because I have used cheap ones in the past and have had problems. Had to use 3 different extractors because each one broke on the first try. I'm a certified mechanic and I know not to force these but this was ridiculous. Not to mention the nightmare of getting the bolts out with broke extractors in them. Craftsman used to stand for quality! Now they are using junk Chinese recycled steel to make their tools cheaper so replacing them isn't a burden. I have a ratchet that my father gave me 30 years ago and it still works as good as the day he gave it to me. Exchanged a 3/8 ratchet and in 3 turns the mechanism fell out! Very sad and disappointing!!!

Totally useless

As many stated, this tool won't extract any harden steel screws/bolts. The tool is made of extremely brittle material and will break off as soon as a moderate force is applied. The broken piece gets then stuck in the hole making it even harder to extract the broken bolt because you can't drill it out. Don't waste your time and money on this tool.

BROKE WITH FIRST USE!

Used 2 of these and both broke first time without much pressure on them. Went to return them and was told not under the Craftsman Warranty. Waste of time and money. Like other reviewers, should have known better as soon as I seen "Made in China" The Craftsman name isn't what it used to be! Made in China tools, I can find almost anywhere at way way less money and some with lifetime replacement. Not a big Snap-On fan but definitely will explore from here on out.

Broke after second use

Worked great the first bolt I removed. The second was a little bit more tough. Snapped half way through the removal.

Go Good or go cry

You can try other brands of extractors but will they work? After a co worker of mine tried repeatedly tried to extract a stripped out hex key set screw with some cheap extractor and made the set screw even worse. My co worker went to get a drill and a tap. When he left I got my Craftsman extractors out determined the best size and wham it was out. I had the bearing off the shaft replaced with a new bearing and was picking up the rest of his cheap extractors by the time he got back with a drill and tap. A few days later I saw he had purchased a set of Craftsman extractors.

DO NOT BUY!!!

I purchased this item to remove a broken head bolt from my Mitsubishi pickup truck. I thought... Craftsman... there is a name I can trust... That may have been so in the past... but I do not think I will ever buy Craftsman tools again. I should have known not to when they were "made in China". This thing broke on the first turn. SO now I am stuck with a head bolt that I have to call a machinist to remove. This is the second set of Craftsman screw extractors that I have had that have broken (had the micro drill set...). Save your money... get a decent set. Stay away from these things...

It shattered.

I think it would work fine for bolts or screws that aren't stuck too tightly, because it bites well. However, I was astounded at how easily it shattered. I was using the smallest extractor, applying about the same amount of force I would use to open a lightly stuck jar, and SNAP! The tip broke off inside the bolt shaft- with no way to pull it out! I was using it when the work area was hot to the touch- maybe this weakened it? Still, the earlier comments about toughness make me wonder if quality may have declined in recent years. Also... contrary to an earlier review it is not designed for reverse-threaded applications. The cutting edges are angled like a pinwheel so the tool bites nicely when turned counter-clockwise (lefty) and releases when turned clockwise (righty).

I would recommend this product to a friend.
