    Nice Garden Tractor for the price April 30, 2011

    For the homeowner that has a large yard to mow or needs to use ground-engaging attachments, this Garden Tractor does a good job for the money. Some assembly is required, although Sears volunteered to assemble mine for free and I picked it up rather than have it delivered. The mower deck was easily assembled and mounts to the tractor without much effort. That took about 30 minutes the first time, and 10 minutes subsequently. A hitch kit (sold separately) is required for some ground engaging accessories, but needs to be removed when using accessories with a smaller hitch pin such as Craftsman utility trailers. The hitch kit has a quick removal and attachment feature that takes less than a minute to do. The GT6000 comes with a brush guard that tilts out of the way when opening the hood via a manual release catch. The hood does not latch and moves loosely when driving over bumps. I noticed some wear on the plastic protectors after only a couple of hours of use. Sears really should provide a rubber latch of some sort to prevent this type of wear. The Kohler engine never stalled even when cutting thick brush or pulling heavy loads up hills. A reverse-mowing feature is provided to allow mowing in reverse without stalling the tractor or reversing the deck blades. The GT6000 hydrostatic transmission makes it easy to run the engine at full power yet keep the tractor speed low for precision mowing or towing heavy loads, and then quickly speed up or reverse without manually changing gears. The 54" deck cuts a large swath of grass and easily handles high weeds in two passes (per the mowing instructions). Trimming and lawns is done in one pass, as one would expect. The tractor is capable of working on 15-degree slopes, which isn't a lot of slope. Unfortunately some limitations are noticeable on hills: too much tilt to the side causes the engine to burn oil until the tractor is level again, the high-side tire tends to spin, and braking is "interesting" going down a hill with loose dirt since the rear turf tires will slip in the dirt and not hold the tractor from sliding. Sears used to sell an AG (bar) tire and wheel combination but that does not seem to be available today and the sales staff really didn't know what I was talking about; nor were chains or weights available at my local store. On a plus side, the 12ga steel frame flexes a bit more than the 9ga frames on the "Professional" products, which can be either a plus or minus depending on how you look at it. The lighter gauge frame offers a more comfortable ride over bumps and Sears also offers a longer warranty on the GT6000 than on a PGT tractor, however the PGT 9ga frame feels more "like a tractor" and I suspect that it would generally take more abuse. 4 stars for a good value, high utility, and long warranty. Would give 5 stars if braking on loose soil was better and AG tires were easily available as accessories.

    Major Disappointment March 11, 2012

    Just bought & was using for the first time. I was about 90 minutes into my first cut w/ the GT600 and the belt came off the deck. I am done for the day & the next 18 days...until Sears can schedule someone to come fix it (yes...18 days). Customer service was poor... called the 800 number for help & the first guy I spoke with was grilling me about how I engaged the blades, how fast I was going, etc... implying it was operator error and there was no guarantee is would be covered. I then was transferred 3 more times through various departments. Sears was having a hard time deciding if it was the fault of the delivery guys not properly setting it up, my fault for cutting my grass or a legitimate issue... I guess the mystery will be solved on 3/28 Stay tuned. On the positive side... I was impressed with the turning radius and the power of the engine.... too early to tell on the rest... other than I was p*ssed it broke down 90 minutes into my first cut & then the CS guy tries to blame it on me & then it takes them 18 days to get someone to come fix it...

    When I first starting looking at garden tractors I found that John Deere has the same Kolher motor in them as the Craftsman only twice as much money! We have a 20 acre hobby farm and this tractor is a work horse. We mow 10 acres of grass and have hauled tons of wood with it with a trailer since we heat our house with wood. In the past 8 years I have only gone through one drive belt and two mower deck belts and 2 sets of blades which is not bad. I estimate I have around 2,000 hours on this tractor so far. The only thing I do run Amsoil in it and change it once every 2 years and the best place to find belts is www.searspartsdirect.com For the price and the quality you can't find a better tractor!

    Craftsman 54 did more work in 2 hours than my other lawn tractor did in 4 hours. I have two acres of land and an easment of over a half mile that I mow regularly. This lawn tractor is a real work horse.

    The design of the Kohler twin 26hp engine is not suitable for the YT4500 mower.  Oil circulation is the problem and allows oil to collect in the top of the engine and then somehow drain back into the exhaust system.  This happens when the mower tilts as little as 5 degrees.  Then a huge cloud of bluish-white smoke billows out of the exhaust as it burns.  The oil level drops between 1/4 and 1/2 quart per smoke event. 

    The mower does cut grass and rapidly but the horrible clouds of burned oil pollute and contaminate the air, land, and water plus cause undue expense and engine wear.  This model of rider mower should be recalled and a full refund given to any one who purchased this faulty- badly-designed mower.

    One very disappointed customer.
