Strong
Pleasantly surprised as i had high expectations from a garden tractor. Ive used my 1999 lt1000 as a garden tractor without disappointment. Modifications and brackets for ground engaging equipment worked well but i felt like i was hurting it. Finally gave it to family and it still goes strong. The new g5500 has taken everything ive thrown at it, including pulling three sizable trees right outof the ground. Happy so far. Added a mulch plate, but the stock blades are not quite up to the task. Works but you have to slow down. The keyless start is cool, but i miss the simplicity of the key. Have to put the code in everytime you stop the mower and hop off even if its just for a second.

Do Not Buy! I repeat DO NOT BUY! List below of reasons why you shouldn't!!!
Tractor was to be delivered by Sears... I received my first tractor damaged ( huge gash in the hood and the deck belt was making a weird rotational noise when you let out the brake pedal so I returned it. I received my second tractor Non functioning (would not start / no spark and a defective front right tire that had a huge slice appearance but was really a factory defect in the side ply and the wheels were so far toed in that something was either bent or defective in the front end) so I returned it. I received my third and final tractor as well with issues (missing the emblem in the center of the steering wheel how they missed this is beyond me)... Belt was defective and as soon as you let out the foot brake it made a whining noise just like the first tractor that shook the whole foot pedal as the belt would make its rotation around the pulleys in a sort or rhythmic sequential pattern... I wasn't about to order a fourth and they sent out a new belt and emblem for the steering wheel. I used the tractor 2 times total and on the third use with 1.2 Yes 1.2 hours on it I went to go start it and nothing happened. Apparently or so it seemed my code wouldn't enter into ignition so I tried resetting my passcode and it wouldn't take it. At this point I'm past my 30 day return period so I had a repair man out and the end result was a bad starter solenoid burnt out the ignition, the solenoid was replaced and it would start now but ended up replacing the ignition as well because only part of it was working and wouldn't allow you to program it. After the new ignition it started right up and the new ignition was functioning properly and allowed you to program it etc. I used the tractor a few minutes making sure it was all set and put it away. The next time I used it and the only time I used it for a real solid cutting within 45 minutes I was going down a hill and turned the wheel toward the right and lost control of the steering and the wheels completely locked to the right and brought be to an abrupt stop in the middle of the street with the wheels all cocked to the right and a steering wheel that spun in circles freely. What happened was the manufacture forgot to tighten the two bolts that hold the steering shaft in place and within a couple hours total use the gears no longer meshed and made me lose control of the steering. It took me an hour to get the tractor out of the street back to my garage. End result the wheel spindles were bent from being forced so hard in one direction. Once again another service call and spindles were replaced and front end gone through to make sure it was all tight. I have exactly 2.6 hours on a brand new tractor that I wished I never bought. Sears should be offering me an apology and an extended warranty free of charge! My JD (green and yellow tractor) L120 lasted me a total of 14 years and the only service call I made was for a non charge issue which was a result of a wire that got frayed. I'm so disappointed!

Excellent mower

There is no better bang for your buck. You would have to spend twice this to find something comparible. Both the engine and transmission are massively strong. And though I didnt buy it to mow grass but rather for heavy duty yard work I was rather suprised how well this 54" deck can cut. Most 50"+ dont cut this well. As far as comfort I love the seat and the foot pedal control is nice though I prefer the cruise control of my #20383 craftsman mower. If I had one complaint its that im not crazy about about the keycode start preferring the classic key start

54 inch craftsman tractor

I haven't had a lot of time to try this garden tractor out yet since it is past the mowing season. But I did take it out the first day that after I picked it up to to fire up the motor and check it out a little bit. My first impressions are that the Briggs motor seems very powerful for it and sounds great. It's not overly loud and seems to be a strong runner. One concerned that I had was the high that the mower deck could be raised to. On my first run out through the yard I actually got hung up on a trying to cut a corner at a moderate incline or moderate Deekline when the mower deck hung up on the ground. I was able to with the help of a neighbor push it back out and everything was fine but it just gives me a little while cause of worry. I'll just have to be more careful next

Hope it lasts. A little apprehensive

Have had it a couple of months now. Going into snow season now so we'll see how it does with that. The pros are that it mows very nicely. Or at least it did after I loaded the tires with anti freeze to give it better traction on my hilly terrain. The ride is acceptable and the speed is nice for getting around the property between jobs. Cons are you might want some ear protection when mowing. That deck is really loud when turned on. Although everything seems to work ok, the linkages underneath the tractor really rattle. I haven't yet figured out if something is installed improperly but it doesn't sound right. I'll look into that more when I take the deck off for snow season. Much more worrisome to me is the rattling sound that the engine makes at low speeds once it warms up. If it is going to blow up, I sure hope it does it under warranty. Going to do the first oil change this week. Maybe that will help that some. The Turn Tight steering has been very useful. I haven't had any trouble out of the axle or linkage because of it. But I do note that steering takes considerably more effort than steering ever took on my 5 year old Craftsman YTS3000. It's not a lube problem. I keep everything well oiled and greased so maybe it's just the difference in steering geometry. The hood redesign with the plastic side panels is just lame and not well thought out. The panels are in the way of engine cleaning and service and have to be removed for some things like changing the oil. Their attachment design is poor when new and I don't think they will stand up touch frame flexing without breaking. They never stay properly latched to the tractor and hood. They are really aggravating. Craftsman should have stuck with a simpler and more durable design. Hope I feel better about this tractor after we get some snow plowing and blowing experience. Right now, I'm a little concerned about it he issues which I've perceived on mine.

Under-Engineered version 2

I have the same issue as this guy. "The turn tight steering is not adequate for this size mower. There is a lot more stress on the front axle, steering, wheels, etc. These parts on this tractor are not strong enough for the stress allowed by the turn tight feature. I have had several failures of parts of the front wheels and steering, and have replaced the axle, spindles, wheel bearings, and steering weldments on this tractor. We have had other equivalent Sears mowers, but without the tight turn feature, mowing the same yard for 10 years and have never had this problem. The spindle on this mower is the same size as a regular mower and it bends and makes the front end out of adjustment. After 3 visits and replacing the entire front end, Sears brought me a new tractor and after 50 hours I am having the same problem! Sears is in denial that there is a problem with this mower."

Overall
Early impressions

I've had this tractor about 3 weeks. I serviced it and checked all adjustments before using it. No problem there. I expected to do this. Getting used to the foot controls has been a little bothersome. My 2009 YTS3000 has a hand control which I find to be easier to use and smoother operating for most purposes. But that's just a personal preference. I've researched it and I think I can change to hand control without much trouble if it continues to bother me that much. I think I may find the foot control to have an advantage over the hand control while using attachments like the snow blower or scoop which require the use of the right arm during operation. I'm not crazy about the push button starting but it's OK. The key switch would be simpler, more reliable, and a much cheaper repair if trouble were to occur. I see no advantage that this switch has over the key switch on my older Craftsman. My old tractor has reverse mowing capabilities, too. The only "advantage" that this gimmick seems to have is a pretty much useless battery condition indicator. Given a choice, I wouldn't have bought the switch. The 3 blade 54" mowing deck is a LOT louder than than the 46" 2 blade deck on my 3000. It sounds something similar to a King Air twin engine prop jet doing its pre-takeoff rev-up check. Yeah, it's that loud if you're sitting on top of it. It's probably not much different from a lot of other 3 blade decks in that size range, though. The deck has rollers that do a good job of preventing scalping if properly adjusted. But the air flow isn't as good as the 46" deck. It tends to blow clippings out around the deck lip instead of just the exhaust chute. It can also cut a little higher than the 3000 but it's easier to get a nice even cut with the 46" deck. I'm thinking I'll probably continue to use my 3000 for mowing and blowing for a long time. Steering is noticeably harder on this tractor. On my 3000, it's basically a one hand job. Not so on this tractor. I'm guessing that is mostly due to larger front tires, the wider axle, and the differences in steering geometry. A little more breaking in might help, too. I don't notice any real advantage in turning radius over my 3000. It didn't claim to have "tight turn" steering but seems to be just as capable of tight turns as the new tractor. I only bought this tractor to get a heavier transmission which I hope will withstand what I do with it better than the transaxle in my 3000 has been able to. I'm hoping that the G730 Hydro Gear will eliminate the need to rebuild the T2 Hydro Gear in the 3000 every few years. If it does that, and the rest of the tractor performs as well as the 3000 has, I expect to be very happy with this tractor.

Overall
So far, so good!

I purchased this Garden Tractor for a number of reasons, but the primary reason was, it is the most tractor you're going to get for this amount of money. I needed the heavy-duty trans-axle (Hydro Gear G730) because my yard is hilly and I tow a heavy trailer laden with firewood many times a year. This tractor is indeed fast (7.5 MPH), not that I need it to go fast, but if you want the speed, it's available! The Tight-Turn feature (6" radius) is especially nice for swinging around my trees. Several of the reviewers here mention that they have broken parts of their steering mechanisms due to this feature. I have a bit of advice: SLOW DOWN! Just like an automobile, you can't slam on the gas and swing the wheel to the locks, then expect nothing to break! Turning at that angle is meant to be done slowly and carefully. I've executed the maneuver many times this mowing season and I've had no trouble whatsoever. I am not particularly fond of the electronic Complete Start system, however the one feature about it that I love is the reverse mowing feature - once I hit the button, I never have to push a button again if I want to mow / snow blow in reverse! My old ********** had the annoying yellow plunger that had to be depressed every. single. time....*ugh*. It was rather annoying when I forgot to push it and the mower stalled out. I am happy with the power this tractor has and the mower does a nice job. It's so easy to remove the deck to clean it as well, although I can tell it is definitely a heavy-duty deck due to its weight! Granted it's 54" and my old one was 48", but there is a substantial difference. As one reviewer stated, the frame does flex noticeably on certain uneven terrain and I've noticed the hood pops out of it's little groove when this happens, but it's nothing major and I don't see any long term ill effects due to it. I'm anxiously awaiting the snow to start flying so I can test out the snow thrower. It looks almost identical, albeit beefier, than my previous ********** model, so if it's at all similar, this thing will be a monster! The blades are serrated and there are more of them, so I'm not anticipating any problems. I get a LOT of snow where I live. Maintenance looks to be very basic and the Briggs and Stratton Platinum engine (this was one more reason I selected this tractor over a Cub Cadet - I do NOT trust the new Kohler Courage motors) is laid out very nicely, so oil changes, and fuel filter changes will be a breeze. Hopefully this tractor will last me a good long time!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Not a Wheel Horse, but what is?

Engines have come a long way since cast single cylinder iron kohlers, and the cast iron transaxle put WH out of business... 54" Sears.. Wow what power and at a reasonable rpm too. The Hydro gear transmission grabs, like a freight train too. Filter on as it well... Its a "step-through" too so less climbing, the seat is high and above the mower deck, for less dust and grass in your lap as well. It mows, let me say. The deck clears itself, and as i mentioned, you don't need full throttle. It turns on a dime which is useful, but probably not improving the durability. The frame twists on hills, so i will likely add some x-braces to stop that. I think the transmission is the best item here, followed by the briggs, and then the rest of it. The seat is pretty comfy too! I gave $2600 for mine. I could not come close to as capable machine for that amount elsewhere. My WH is 21 yrs old. Don't expect that here, but you will get your yard mowed in half the time as an old gear shift iron block dinky deck of yesteryear will do...
