    This is a MAN tool March 20, 2010

    I actually got this for my wife because she wanted some heavy yard cleanup and tree trimming.  She laughed at the birthday gift, but has used it with me alot!  We cut down a tree, cut up the limbs and had them hauled away...but all those little branches and leaves?  We ground them up and started a great compost heap!  Now we grind up all the trimmings every spring and fall and it is great!!!!!!

    Warning: check the engine bolts and plugs first! April 09, 2007

    Read the two manuals, checked bolts for tightness, added gasoline and the oil provided. The machine started on the first pull. After close to 3 hours chipping and shredding, the engine slowed and quit. I thought it was out of gasoline. As I moved the machine I noticed the OIL DRAIN PLUG on the ground. NO OIL in the sump. RUINED ENGINE. So much for reliability! Chipping performance is good if the wood isn't green and you cut brush and branches into pieces no longer than 12-15 inches. Most time is spent trimming and shoving matter that's more than 1/2 inch in diameter. This is not a high throughput machine.

    heavy duty chipper!

    I purchase one of these chippers from Sears along with the extended maintenance agreement. The intent was to use the chipper to chip small grape vines and other residential yard waste. Amazingly, the chipper does not chip at all! It does beat the vines and other small branches (less than 1/4") around, but does nothing else productive. We had Sears maintenance come out twice, but they said it is operating normally, but just does not operate well. Imagine that. The chipper has been operated approxiamtely 15 times with no success and is now taking up space in our garage. What a horrible dissappointment from Sears and Craftsman.

    I am a huge Craftsman guy. The salesmen in my local store know me by name because I am in there buying so often. I am occasionaly disappointed with the quality of Sears products but I am pleasantly surprised with this one. I got such a great deal on it that it would be tough to complain. It was originally $719,00 but someone had purchased it and returned it so it was marked down to $510,00 and then $437,00 with a 10% back rebate so I paid only $394,00. Pretty good!! I chipped 3 six foot high piles of branches in about 3 hours and although it states that 2" is the max it will take larger branches if you feed them slowly and they are very dry. The unit is built heavier and with better quality than some other Sears products so I would recommend this to anyone who needs to do some serious yard work. I can't comment on the reliability yet because I've only had it for a week but Sears products are usually pretty reliable and parts are readily available so I would be suprised if this thing doesn't last me at least ten years.

    The good news is that the chipper/shredder runs. Accessing the oil drain plug demands the talent of a contortionist, to add oil you must have funnel with a goose neck tube. Loosening the oil add plug demands some wide jawed pliers or other device. The catcher bag is a very poor way to capture the shredded material. Trying to keep it tight enough from blowing off is a challenge. I tried to find out the model # of the Briggs & Stratton engine from Sears local service man. He couldn't tell me which it was and couldn't find out from his sources. Not very re-assuring for future service. This purchase was a good example of the hazards of buying on line.
