Secret Weapon for a Great Lawn November 07, 2008

I used to see the maintenance people at work zipping around with Dixie Choppers and such. I was impressed with how they could turn on a dime. I'm sure they're great for professionals who just want to cut the grass as quickly as possible and get on to the next job. I've learned that just because you get paid to do a job does not make you a craftsman, it makes you a professional. I almost fell into the zero-turn radius tractor trap, but I'm glad I didn't. This front mount dethatcher is one of the tools that makes me a craftsman. Do you want to seriously compete for best lawn in your subdivision? If you do, then you cannot just cut the grass as quickly as possible like a professional and expect that you'll have something special. You're going to have to care for the grass like you would plants. You're going to have to water the proper amount, etc. And, you're going to have to dethatch it. I cannot envision dethatching a lawn and not picking up the clippings and thatch. So, to me, the idea of a rear mounted dethatcher is out because I don't want to have to go back over the whole lawn a second time with the bagger installed. That's the beauty of the front mount dethatcher, because you have the bagger simulataneously installed on the back and you only make one pass. I've never yet seen a zero-radius turn tractor that had a provision in the front to mount a dethatcher. To use this product on your lawn, you're going to have to go slow. You'll pick up a lot of thatch and clippings, and you'll have to do a lot of bagging. The results, however, are fantastic. We have one of the best lawns in our neighborhood, and this dethatcher is one of the tools that gives my family the edge. A landscape professional came out to look at some tree plantings just one day after I had dethached. He looked over the grass with astonishment and exclaimed, "Lawns don't look this good by accident!" I've had no problems with my dethatcher, and I highly recommend this to other craftsmen who are willing to put in the work to have a great lawn.

    poor quality April 07, 2009

The assembly was no problem, except for the missing front wheel. Then, I had to wait for the item for almost a week (so much for 24h hotline). When I was finally able to put it all together and into action, this thing performed so poorly, it was almost funny. I cannot recommend it. The front wheel keeps locking up and the dethatcher actually bucks up and under the tractor. I took it back to the store and got my money back, thank god.

    Pros:
    Easy to assemble,great value!!

Easy to assemble, did an excellent job of dethatching the grass and my lawn looks great!!! Don't try to set a speed record while doing this, go at a slower then normal pace. Saves time by bagging as you go.  Only thing I don't like is the lift handle is up against my leg.   Overall great product!

    Works Great April 17, 2010

    Easy to assemble,great value!!

The dethatcher went together pretty easy. You only need good hand-tools, but can speed up assembly with a small impact gun. I did my entire lawn and was amazed at how much debris came out of my lawn. I have a three bag collection system on my tractor and must have emptied it 15 times over the course of the day. I only have two things to criticise. The first is that the handle to raise and lower the attachment should be longer. You have to reach a pretty long way to reach it. The second, and this is a word of caution, is that the attachment is connected to the tractor frame right under the engine exhaust. If you go to remove the attachment, wait for the tractor to cool because the keeper plates especially on the right side gets really hot. I went to remove it and burned my hand.

Wheel needs to be redesigned April 10, 2010

    Pros:
    Easy to assemble
    Cons:
    Front wheel sucks

Picked it up and put it together on Wednesday 4/7/10, used it Thursday and it made it about 3/4 of the way around my 1 acre yard before the front wheel melted, yes, melted off.  I did make sure it had a nice thick coat of grease before use also.  Called Agrifab this morning and they are shipping out a new wheel that I will get Tuesday.  Said that it was probably getting too much downward pressure and to adjust the front up a little.

Instructions were followed to the letter and it was actually very easy to put together except getting the couple of bolts in from the inside of my tractor's front mount.  Found it easier to put the bolt in the end of a box wrench and use that to get it in the hole.
