Great to have December 05, 2006

I received one of these as a gift. I thought it quite frivolous, but tried it several times so the wife could see I was pleased. I, of course checked it's accuracy and it was right on. Sooner then I expected iIwas back to the manual to figure out how to use all of the tables it has and I find myself grabbing it BEFORE the tape. It is a remarkably versatile tool, sturdy, fairly easy to use, and has a wealth of functions to figure board feet, number of posts per given run (in fencing), simple totaling of measurements when figuring square feet measurement is one that I love. No more trying to find a pencil and paper. All in all this is an excellent tool to add to your box, and the price is very reasonable, and is easy to begin to use, right out of the box. But use the manual and learn the added features.

    unhappy February 03, 2008

I have had this unit for about 2 years it is not consitant on measuring. Worked just ok till the battery needed to be replaced, once that was done the unit will only work occasionaly. I am currently looking to replace with a different unit and would not recommend this at all.

Do not buy this tool. April 14, 2010

    Cons:
Constant unreliable readings,Uses Ultrasonic waves rather than laser

I hate to say it but stay away from this tool. Remember it uses ultrasonic waves to take its reading not lasers. All this tool is good for is projecting red cross-hairs on your wall. I bought this tool on clearance for around $10. For $10 how could I not buy it. Got it home and tried it in multiple rooms. Length, width, and height, most were way off. Off so much that I didn't need to even bother with a tape. Like others have said because of the sound waves it can change based on the material that it is projected against. ie. carpet vs tile. I am still very interested in getting a laser messuring tool but this is certainly not it. I promply returned the item the next day for a full refund. Luckly I have other uses for the batteries.

Buy another tool July 10, 2009

    Pros:
Easy to read LCD,Good size buttons
    Cons:
Constant unreliable readings,Uses Ultrasonic waves rather than laser

I just purchased the Craftsman Laser-Guided Measuring tool (Sears #48252).  My measurement from wall to wall gave a different reading each time I pressed the read button.   I got out the trusty metal tape measure and the actual distance was 18'.  The "laser guided" tool's first reading was 11'03", the next reading was 14'02" and the third reading was 6'.   The packaging said it was 99.5% accurate..  hummmm.  So I thought there must be a calibration adjustment.... NONE...  I read and reread the instructions and it simply said if the reading is inacurrate, the battery may be low, I just put a fresh Enigizer Alkaline 9V battery so that wasn't it.  The next words of wisdom said I can return it to any Sears store for an exchange.  So thats what I will be doing tomorrow.  I dont see how a mass produced product can be so different from one tool to the next.   Also, why Ultrasonic?  Perhaps since this tool was made in 2006, that was the best technology back then, but come on... Sears can update the tool to use a laser to make the measurment.  Why don't they?

Nice to play with August 23, 2008
    via bazaarvoice
    By astar of D.C.

My unit is a toy, not a tool. I can get reading in empty room only. If there is an object in the room, the sonic echo is giving different readings. It reads the echo from other objecys. 27 foot is too far for it, and all I have is Err. No reading if the surface is soft, like tapestry or upholstery. I am returning this unit back.

Sonic unit - sonic limitations May 22, 2008
    via bazaarvoice
    By MSGJEB of Unknown

This unit is a sonic measuring device, the laser is only for basic pointing. Like all sonic measuring devices, it can be confused by echoes from nearby objects and does not get good readings from soft, sound diffusing objects. A decent device for the money, but be aware of the limitations and do not expect laser precision or accuracy.
