    My Craftsman model 82005 multimeter did not function at all! April 03, 2011

    I've been an Amateur Radio operator for more than 50 years and have been using electronics test gear for even longer. I literally smoked my Craftsman model 82400 multimeter (no longer available) by inadvertently exceeding its ac voltage limit (apparently it had no fuse to protect the meter from this possibility). Since I was eager to continue work on an electronics repair project, I foolishly went back to Sears and bought the similarly priced model 82005. It wasn't until I took the meter out of its packaging, however, that I learned the necessary 9 V battery was not included. The salesperson did not mention this need, much less try to sell me one. Fortunately I had several on hand. Installing the battery was not that easy, since you have to remove two screws with tiny Philips heads, then convince a plastic cover (which also holds the meter's fold-out stand in place) to lift out. That task completed, I was extremely dismayed to find that in the continuity setting, the meter pretty much beeped constantly or emitted bursts of beeps that sounded a bit like Morse code. That wasn't the worst of it. The meter simply failed to measure voltage, period. I could not get it to do so much as test a 1.5 V cell. Put across the ac power line in the ac mode, it read the 120 V ac as 0.7 V. I even checked the internal fuse (extremely difficult to reach) as recommended in the user manual. I'm a regular Sears shopper and generally have been pleased with the Craftsman line. I own several Craftsman tools, plus a set of tool caddies. This unit does not deserve the Craftsman name.
