The Craftsman Professional Fixed Base Router has 2-1/4 hp and a 12.5 amp permanently lubricated ball bearing motor with variable speed from 12,000 to 25,000 RPM (no load speed). It's a heavy-duty professional router that cuts smoothly and easily through soft woods, hard woods, veneers and plastics alike. The router includes both 1/4 and 1/2 in. collets. A spindle lock is located in the front of the router for easy removal of bits and collets with a single wrench. The bit is secured at the desired height by a positive, cam-locking mechanism. The electric feedback control feature ensures the proper RPM for the bit size and material throughout the cutting operation. Soft start technology helps prevent router take-offs as the motor steadily revs to the desired speed. The router's ergonomically designed tear-drop handles dampen vibration and provide a comfortable grip in a range of positions. Micro height bit adjustment can be made in 1/64 in. increments by simply turning the height adjustment knob. The clear sub-bases, which accept threaded router bushings, together with the built in LED light illumination enhance visibility of the work piece and the bit. Dual view windows provide a clear sightline to the bit and work piece from either the front or back of the router. A chip deflector helps keep the chips contained and away from the operator. A 1-1/4 in. vacuum attachment adapter is featured for efficient dust and debris collection.     Best of the Best...on par with Bosch, Festool, etc. March 30, 2011

    This was my first big-boy tool purchase...getting into woodworking and needed something above beginner grade.

    This fit the bill...I researched fully and found the bundle on sale for $209.99...D-Handle, straight and plunge bases with the soft start 2 1/4 HP motor.

    It's SWEET!!!!

    I would buy again if given the choice

    28190 12.5 amp 2-1/4 router April 22, 2011

    The router itself is nice and smooth but the throat plate is not designed well at all. I had to use a forstner bit to make the opening big enough to accept a 3/4 inch rounding bit, a very commonly used bit. That is very poor design! In dealing with this matter, I obviousely had to remove the throat plate from the router and one of the three set screws used to hold it on was on so tight that I had to literally drill it out. I have only used it for one application so far so I think a review a year from now would be much more telling.

    This is a very nicely build router, routed 2 circles out of wood and cutting into the wood was very easy to handle unlike another one I have. Handling and control was very comfortable. It's just another one of those machine that you can get percision out of your work easier than others.

    Pros:
    reliable router

    Overall it's a very good router. Power is as expected, not quite as strong as my milwaukee but it isn't supposed to be.

    The LED lights are very nice and the clear sub base is another benefit for visibility.

    Soft start is like other Craftsman routers as in it starts off very slowly and takes longer to get up to speed than other brands.

    The speed control isn't quite as responsive on this one VS my other Craftsman routers. But works fine.

    The removable cord is a big plus and it's a nice long cord and better cord than the other routers.

    My only complaint on this router as with the others is the one wrench bit changing. You need 3 hands to do it. One to hold the router on the bench another to push the button in and another to turn the wrench. I much prefer two wrench bit changing because I can tighten or loosen the collet with one hand. Just squeeze the wrenches together.

    The biggest quality issue I have is with the collet. It's great to see a real collet on a craftsman router but this one is just barely adequate. It needs a better quality collet all around.
