Own the Complete Set - I Do!

I can't think of very many projects I've undertaken over the years that hasn't required the use of at least one screwdriver. Usually, an assortment of these versatile tools is necessary due to the never ending changes being made in the fastener industry. The good ole fashioned Phillips screwdriver still ranks among my most useful tools!

Craftsman has always had a solid line of screwdrivers. Who hasn't bought a set or been given a set as a gift? Most of us started out our tool collection with these tools.

Well, the designers at Craftsman never seem to be satisfied with "good enough."

They have worked to improve on what many people consider the perfect tool and in my opinion they have succeeded. In a world where most tool manufacturers seem only to be concerned with gadgetry like laser guidance systems, ratcheting what-evers or battery operated this-and-that's, Craftsman has broken down the key features of the common Phillips screwdriver and improved it. You may find some of these ideas used by other companies but I doubt you will find them all used on one tool by anyone else but on the Craftsman Professional Phillips Screwdriver.

  1. The business end of these screwdrivers is precision ground to ensure a secure fit with the fastener with little chance of slippage. This will protect the tool and the fastener.
  2. The tip also features grooves cut into the blade. This further improves the grip with the fastener and enhances your turning power.
  3. The shaft is solid and strong! It is round and chromed, rather that 4-sided. This enables the user to keep the tool cleaner to enable years of satisfactory use.
  4. The largest sizes include a bolster at the joint between the shaft and the handle. This further improves the strength of the tool.
  5. The handle is comfortably designed to prevent user fatigue. Large enough to provide a firm grip and molded with thumb rests.
  6. Each Craftsman Professional Phillips Screwdriver has a hard resin end cap on the butt end of the handle making it easy to identify the size.
  7. Craftsman backs this tool with its famous lifetime replacement warranty.

I can't think of anything I would improve. Can you?

The new hardened tip is terrible

I went through three of these in about a week. I eventually got store credit and used the money for something else. The tip has been changed to a harder metal at the tip, clearly shown by it's darker color. As a result it is extremely brittle. With the first one the tip cracked half off on the first screw, and I didn't even get the screw really tight. The second one lasted until the second screw, then the four sides to the point crumbled so that I was just left with a pin point at the end of the screwdriver, the third, I swapped for something different before I got it out of the store!

If you are just using this for soft wood applications then you might be ok, but if you are using this on cars, aircraft or anything other than something that is soft then the head will break on you in a hurry.

Good screwdriver - worth the price

Good tool - good value. Handle has soft texture but a still has a solid core feel. Tip held up well to some "spirited" usage. Made in USA, definitely a keeper.

Overall
expected craftsman quality, and made in USA

I needed an long P2 screwdriver, and saw this one on sale. Great quality, what I would expect from craftsman (nice, finished tip, handle well made). Cheap tools fall apart, this isn't one of them. If all of the craftsman line were of this quality, I would be a more consistent customer.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Worth the upgrade

Great feel, grip makes this screw driver worth buying. You can easily grip it with or without gloves, greasy hands, or sweaty, and you can still get enough torque to remove even the hardest screws. I did not need it for size or reach, I needed it to remove stubborn screws without stripping them, the length of the screw driver allows for easy removal of tough screws, even some with loctite blue.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Sometimes size DOES matter

For a repair job, I needed a small phillips head screwdriver with a very long handle to reach down a narrow eleven inch shaft. The Craftsman Professional P2x16 seemed like a perfect fit, and it was. The handle is well-formed and offers a firm grip. The head fit snugly into the screws and never slipped or tore them up, even though they had rusted in place. It removed every screw without damaging them at all, so they could be re-used. Outstanding.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Overall
16" screw driver is weak

As an aircraft mechanic I depend on my tools to work harder then myself. But recently I have discovered that the 16" screw driver has been a real pain to use. Part of my job is to inspect aircraft and to do so i have to remove inspection panels. These panels have countersunk screws in them that are sometimes a bit tough to get out and i depend on a long handle screw driver because it has a lot more torque then a short handled one. So as a dedicated Craftsmen tool guy i find these product to be quite awful. Im not sure what the reason is but i have snapped 2 tips so far from these 16" screw drivers. And im not putting much force into getting these screws out, but for some reason the tips on the "Professional Series" tools snap like cheap wood. Im very displeased with the performance and I'm leaning towards buying a Snap-on 16" screw driver. Although I don't want to drop a few hundred dollars on a screw driver. I am curious though what process is made to harden the tips of there tools. Because it seems to me that they skipped the step in making them tough and cut costs to make them cheap and brittle.
