A Beginner's Guide to Juicing

If you are among the millions of people who struggle to get the daily recommended serving of fruits and vegetables, you have probably considered juicing as an option to fit in all of the vitamins and minerals you need throughout the day. Juicing diets are popular because they can make vegetables palatable and easier to eat, but it can be hard to know where to start. While you can easily add a few things into your blender to make a smoothie, it is a little harder to reduce everything down to liquid juice format without specialized tools and instruction.

Learn the Basics

The best way to start juicing is to invest in a good book that covers all the basics. A juicing guide will help take you through every step of the process, from selecting a juicing machine to picking out recipes that fit your dietary needs and lifestyle. The right book can make all the difference, and it will be as helpful as your Betty Crocker cookbook when you need to make sure you are loading up on essential food groups.

Basic Equipment

Once you have learned about the basics, you will need to choose a juicing machine. You can get by with a blender or food processor, but your juices will still have pulp and chunks of fruit or veggie at the bottom. A specialized juicer extracts only the juice form your fruits and vegetables, meaning that you will be able to sip on your creation just as easily as you would any other liquid beverage.

Most juicers come on one of two varieties:

  • A centrifugal juicer uses heat and spinning extraction to get all of the juice out of your food. This method is great for getting a nice and smooth drink, but it does lose a few nutrients to the heat. If you are limited to only liquids for medical reasons, or you truly struggle to get any nutrients in your diet, then this option will be perfect for you.

  • A cold press juicer basically masticates your fruits and vegetables into tiny particulate. You may find that your juices are a little bit thicker with this style of machine, but you will retain all of the desired nutrients.

Secret Ingredients

Turn again to your juicing book to determine what you need for your juicing diet. You can stick with only fruits or only vegetables depending on your preferences and diet. How much you drink a day will depend on how much nutrition you need and how willing you are to prepare each drink. You may also want to consider adding milk or yogurt to your juices to boost your protein and round out your beverage, especially if you are choosing to drink juice in lieu of a meal. Talk with your medical professional about the best way to incorporate juice into your lifestyle.
