Do I Need A Sump Pump?

Sump Pump

When you move into your new home, you'll likely have to decide which appliances and machines are necessary to keep your home in working order. Some machines, like generators, are dependent upon your personal comfort level and the weather conditions in your area. Others, like a refrigerator, are clearly necessities. So when do you need a sump pump? It's generally a good idea to own a basic model, although some circumstances may demand that you own a higher-quality one. As you decide whether or not a sump pump is the right choice for your home, consider the following:

Do I Live In A Flood Plain Or Near A Large Body Of Water?

If the answer is yes, you definitely need a sump pump, even if your basement isn't currently flooding. In flood plains, the ground may not always be able to filter water quickly, which means that the water will find the path of least resistance. Take a look at any gorge or riverbed to see how the water has carved out its own path over time, and you will know that even the strongest foundations can be weakened by rushing waters.

Is My Basement Or Crawl Space Below The Water Table?

If any part of your home is below the water table, then the foundation is pushing back plenty of moisture every day. Again, the best way to keep your basement walls from cracking or weakening against the flow of water is to manage it directly with a sump pump. Prevention is the key because once the structure has lost its integrity you could be faced with some costly repairs.

Do I Live In An Area With Lots Of Rain?

If you live in the desert, moisture is probably among the least of your problems. However, if you live in an area that sees heavy rains, the underground parts of your home could be taking a beating every time a storm hits. A sump pump will activate during rainstorms to help manage excess moisture and water so that you don’t have to worry about whether or not the intensity of the storm will ruin your basement.

Do I Want To Be Prepared?

Even if you don’t live in a high moisture area, it can still be a good idea to own a sump pump. All it takes is one bad rainstorm, hurricane or flash flood to break down the barriers in your basement foundation. Owning a sump pump will let you rest easy knowing that your basement is protected in any circumstance, especially if you install a battery backup to work in the event of a power outage. When you've got everything you need, your basement will stay clean, dry and protected for years to come.
