A bag of microwave popcorn is a go-to comfort food for movie nights and midnight snacks, but it's not the healthiest. Cooking loose kernels in the microwave is a healthier alternative because you can control the amount of butter and oil you use. Buying loose kernels is also more economical because it's so much less expensive than buying individual packages. Another benefit of microwaving loose kernels is less un-popped popcorn.
What you’ll need:
Step 1: Pour kernels in bowl. The amount of kernels you use will vary depending on the size of the bowl you're using, but ¼ cup of kernels is standard. Pour the kernels into a glass, microwave-safe bowl.
Step 2: Add butter and oil. If you want to add a little savory flavoring to your popcorn, add a small amount of oil and melted butter to the bowl, as well. Do not let the butter and oil completely cover the kernels, as that can cause a mess in your microwave.
Step 3: Use a plate to cover the top of the bowl. Set a microwave-safe plate over the bowl to cover it completely. The plate will seal the space over the bowl and ensure that popcorn won't fly all over the place when it's popping.
Step 4: Microwave. Microwave the kernels for two to three minutes or until you hear that the kernels have ceased to pop. The bowl and plate will be extremely hot, so let the popcorn sit for at least a minute before removing the bowl from the microwave.
