The first decision when starting a painting is which type of paint to work with. Art paints come in three types: watercolor, oil and acrylic. Watercolors are the most inexpensive type, and they are easy to clean up after, as a simple dip of the brush in warm water is enough to keep it clean between uses. Because they tend to change form and color as they dry, they may not be the best choice for painting beginners.

Acrylic paints are plastic-based, making them thicker than watercolors and easier to work with. The thickness gives the artist more control over shaping and mixing, while the quick drying time is a bonus for artists trying to work quickly. Mistakes made with acrylics can be corrected by waiting for it to try, then painting another layer over the top. Acrylics can be thinned or cleaned off with water while fresh, but once dry they become insoluble to water, meaning paint brushes used with acrylics need to be cleaned immediately after use.

Oil paints have the most vivid colors of all, and take the longest to dry. This makes them appealing to artists who like to take their time on small details, or who work on several different projects simultaneously. A fresh oil painting can be left for several days before completely drying, allowing the artist to work on other projects if a break is needed. Oil is also forgiving of mistakes; you can easily scrape off the offending layer after it dries without damaging the rest of the painting.

For beginners and expert painters alike, it can be difficult to start out with an empty canvas. Sears is here to help with paint by numbers painting books. These painting instructions have images printed with numbers corresponding to different colors so you know exactly where each one goes. On the other hand, if you want to decorate your home but don't know where do start, painting wall stencils give you a foolproof way to enhance any room in your home. A painted butterfly and floral motif would look perfect in your sunny dining room, while the logo of your favorite sports team would look just right on the wall of your rec room.

For you next project, you don't want to run out of paint halfway through. Stock up on your favorite watercolors, acrylic paints and oil paints at Sears today.
