This Frigidaire washer really saves on water September 22, 2010

This Frigidaire washer is very quiet when it is on.  It uses a lot less water than the top loading machine I had previously.  The clothes seem to get just as clean as the top loading machine and I have saved money on the water bill.  All in all, I am very pleased with the machine, so far.  I haven't had it long enough for any problems to appear.

We had our Frigidaire washer for almost 4 years. I loved it! Now the motor has gone out- apparently a very common problem for this model. Looking at repair costs of $500+ and also being warned that the company has not improved the part- so it most likely will go out again, we were advised not to fix it. I asked if my repair person wanted the old machine, he declined. He will not fix and resell them because he knows they do not last. He told me the best place for it was the dump. This was a great washer but it did not last. Two years ago I would have rated it excellent, now I hesitate to give it a poor- is there anything lower?

Overall Great, Expect $200+ Maintinence, Lacking Support June 10, 2011

    Cons:
    Maintenance

3.5 years of realiable use and clean clothes. Love the water and energy savings. A real workhorse with me running it on High Spin each time. But that has lead to a maintenance issue: it has started beeping and turining itself on and of, on and off, randomly. It also shuts off mid-cycle and not start again....which is pretty inconvenient during the soap/wash cycle.

The Frigidaire website was good for finding a pdf of my Manual, but not much else. I finally found some great info on applianceblog.com/mainforums with posts from people having the same issue who have solved it. Most often it's either one of the the control boards, or the connections to/from them, in case you are having this issue.

Best money I've ever spent! March 18, 2010

    Easy to Use,Capacity,Features,Value for Money,Efficient,Utility Savings,Quiet,Appearance

I had the oldest, loudest, most wasteful and least gentle washing machine before I got this one. My old one could ruin just about anything within 10 washes. So I really wanted to do my research and get all I could get for the lower end budget that I had. After researching for about 3 months and learning all there was to learn about washing machines I decided that I had to have a front loader because I wanted high efficiency and they have the reputation of being much gentler on clothing than a top loader. I also had to go for a brand that has been around for a while because they tend to be less expensive to repair because more repairmen are familiar with them and the parts are carried by more retailers. My dad got an LG washing machine and when it broke he had a very difficult time finding someone that could fix it and when he finally did, the guy could charge whatever he wanted (and he did) since he was well aware that he had no competition. Not a big deal if you plan to get the warranty because Sears will come and fix it, but I would rather spend that extra couple hundred dollars on upgrading the washer than betting on it's failure within the next 2 years. With those specifications in mind, I looked at all the professional and personal reviews for my remaining choices in my price range. That's how I ended up choosing this particular washing machine. It had by far the best reviews, from all of the top online product review websites, out of the 30 or so machines I looked at. I decided to get the matching dryer too.

Once installed they both worked perfectly. I didn't think they looked like they matched very much by the pictures because one looks like it has a square door and the other looks like it has a round door, but the doors are both square. Just was hard to see in the picture. The washing machine is so quiet, even though it's right next to my bedroom I can do a load at night. In the begining we kept thinking it stopped working because it was so quiet we were sure it couldn't possibly be doing anything. But that's what the window if for, to show you that, yes, the machine is working and spinning at full speed! I love all of the different washing options. The 'quick wash' is great if you're in a hurry because it doesn't skimp on the cleaning, just the time. I've had mine for over 2 years now and have never had a single problem. Amazingly my electric bill has gone down by over 1/3! I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I used to have to use the HOT/COLD cycle on my old machine to get things really clean, but with this machine I have found that it doesn't need it. I basically use COLD/COLD for everything and I can't tell the difference. Apparently using the hot/hot cycle will cost about 13 times more than using the cold/cold cycle (.03 cents/load vs. .39 cents/load) because it takes a lot of energy to heat water. Those numbers just get farther apart in cost when you are coming from a non HE, top loader machine which uses more energy in general, regardless of heat settings. I read online that if you do a soak in warm (which this machine will do), it works better than washing it in hot. I do that for my kitchen towels and my husband's work clothes. Hot is reserved for the rare occasion when I want to shrink something.

The same time I got this new washing machine, I had to switch my detergent because the machine only takes High Efficiency detergent and fabric softener that's compatible to he machines. So the fact that I don't have to use the HOT cycle anymore could also have something to do with the HE Tide, I think it's called the 7 signs of clean or something like that. I accidentally got non-HE detergent once and nothing horrible happened. Didn't seem to make a difference, but I still went back to HE because I am told that non HE stuff will create more suds than HE, causing mold to grow in the suds that get stuck in cracks and crevises.

I thought it was kind of cool that the machine doesn't have a load size setting- it weighs the load and only uses the amount of water needed. So when my hubby decides to wash a single shirt, it's not a total waste. The one thing I could possibly say on the negative side of things would be that HE machines can start to smell moldy, as mentioned above. I was warned about this by the Sears salesperson the day I bought the machine. He said that they tell the same thing to anyone getting an HE because the way they are built tends to cause mold under certain conditions. Some websites say the only way to completely avoid the musty smell altogether is to use powder detergent, never liquid. Sears instructed me to leave the door and detergent box ajar after every wash so that they can air out and run a load of just bleech once a month. There are other things you can use like vinegar, powder dishwashing detergent or a product made specifically to clean the inside of an HE machine (Tide makes one). Doing one of these steps once a month regardless of the smell is a bit of a pre-emptive strike, but I like to have a really clean washing machine.

If I had to get another machine for some reason I would definitely buy this one again. It's a solid buy that is really worth the extra couple hundred dollars over the top loaders. It's just about the only thing I own that hasn't ever had an issue and I highly recommend buying this machine if you want to get the most for your money.
