    Back in the late eighties, I had gotten serious about building up a good selection of tools to work on cars (and eventually motorcycles) as a hobby. I had begun with a Craftsman electric impact wrench, but it turned out to be woefully inadequate. Eventually, it became apparent that I needed to go pneumatic. After purchasing my compressor, I also picked up an Ingersoll Rand model 231-A. It served faithfully and dutifully for at least 15 years before I decided to purchase this Titanium model. My primary reason for buying this model was that it is lighter, but the extra power was also a secondary consideration. I've been using it for a while now, and I think that its performance is very impressive. It definitely operates with even more authority than the 231-A. I have not had the opportunity to try its main competitor, the Chicago Pneumatic Turbo (Item #00918268000) whose power specs are slightly better but is also slightly heavier. I would recommend reading the reviews of both to make a fully informed purchase. The real question on my mind is whether the Titanium is a good value compared to the 231-A. And, I do have reservations about that particular point. In building up a tool collection and spending money on cars and motorcycles, you can get into debt quickly if you are not very careful. Projects often take significantly more cash than first estimated. I think that the 231 would be sucessful in most instances, but it is now in revision G (item #00915102000). Therefore, you are paying a significant premium for a lighter tool with some extra power. I'm at a position now where I can afford to make the more expensive purchase, but there was a time 20 years ago when I needed to manage my money more tightly and save for retirement, etc. For a hobbyist, perhaps this model is more of a luxury than a necessity.
