BE AWARE...of a Basic Engineering Problem

I have had two of these ranges only because I MUST have a downdraft system. Unlike the Sears model, the control panel for this range is located just above the oven door. Over time, heat will disintegrate the the plastic cover and work its way to the electronics. I plan to bite the bullet and go with something that works...and lasts. This product has been a huge disappointment.

      Awful downdraft system.

The downdraft system is severely flawed. As the previous reviews have mentioned. You can not control the downdraft when the grill burners are on. As soon as you turn the grill on the downdraft turns on and stays at High. You can not use the down draft and the cook top burners at the same time. If you put a pan on the burner the downdraft pulls the flame away from the pan resulting in uneven heating and cooking. I wanted a grill top but didn't have room for a 36" range. I was excited when I found this model. But now I'm extremely disappointed. Jenn-Air should take this model off the market. I do agree with previous review regarding the oven. It works very well. But I don't do much baking. Now I have a vented hole in my house with the downdraft. If I change ranges I have to fill the hole in and install a hood and have a second hole 4' higher. Jenn-Air was absolutely no help. They are sending a second technician out to check on the problem. They said if it's operating as expected and the down draft works there is nothing they can do. But Ryan one of the Jenn-Air managers said they will let corporate know about the flaw. Where does that leave me? Out $2400 and having to spend another $2400+ to install a new range. SAVE YOUR MONEY DO NOT BUY THIS RANGE.

Grill is Great/Stove Top Not So Much

I have had this range for 8 years, the oven works well, the convection is a little on the noisy side (lots of clicks and vibrations). I use the grill at least once a week (burgers, steaks, chicken, veggies), it's great and I have never had smoke fill the room (at least not from the grill). So what is disappointing: 1)it is very tall, I believe to accomodate the fan components; 2)no you cannot have the fan on and the burners or the fireplace for that matter, it just does not work well, the fan is so powerful that it distorts the flame so that it doesn't heat the pan and it pulls the smoke from the fireplace so that it sets off your fire/smoke alarm (small 1050 sq ft house maybe not a problem in larger home); 3) like another reviewer mentioned the area under the fan filter (the center area in the picture) the paint peels; 4) grill is a pain to clean and occasionally the grease trap gets clogged and you have to use floral wire to clean it; 5) if you spend this much on a range I expect that you would cook a lot and honestly 2 burners is not enough; 6) stainless steel maintenance, you definetly have to keep up on it, you have to get the special stainless steel cleaner/sealer that protects it from water. I would not recommend wiping it down and walking away, it protects the finish if you wipe and then dry otherwise rust starts to accumulate in the stainless steel grain. So overall I love the grill and the oven, but not the burners, fan or finish. I would buy again only if they made it with 4 burners and an overhead fan.

      Mediocre at best.

This is my third Jenn-Air stove and I replaced an existing model during a kitchen update. The down draft interferes with the flame on the gas burners and at best does not work very well. The top of the stove has a lip that collects gunk and is very difficult to clean. The interior of the downdraft exhaust peeled and rusted. Something splashed on the front of the stove and it rusted. The legs had to be removed during installation to make the surface flush to the countertop. I have never used the grill feature on this particular range but it was messy and smokey with previous models. The self-cleaning oven cleans okay but I've seen better. The convection feature is terrific!! The oven performs fairly well but in this price range I expected better.

      Disappointing for Jenn Air

I previously owned an all-electric Jenn Air downdraft range and liked it a lot, but I always wanted a gas cooktop. Having a shortage of storage I liked the downdraft because I can have a cabinet over the stove. When I upgraded my kitchen I went straight for this one. Since I already had a JennAir downdraft in the space, I figured all the venting, etc had already been done the first time. I was appalled at how difficult it was to install. It cost a fortune because so much extra work had to be done to refit the exhaust system. The connections weren't anywhere near in the same place. They apparently made no effort whatsoever to make upgrading easy. It was also very tall. I have standard height cabinets and he had to take the legs off and then shim the stove to get it down to the counter top height. I think the people who did the floor added about a 1/4" or more underflooring, but that should be adjustable with the legs, as it was with the old one. I give the convection oven an A+. It heats quickly and bakes evenly. It has all sorts of settings and options. The only negative I have about the oven so far is that the probe is extremely difficult to pull out and the oven is hot while that's going on, but I love the feature so I use it anyway. The cooktop however is a great disappointment. First of all, I'm not sure downdraft exhaust works with gas at all. The guy who installed it set it so it doesn't draw too hard, which makes grilling a smokey mess. However, even at that lower setting the downdraft pulls the flames on the burners enough to affect how they work. If he cranked the downdraft up I think the lower burner settings might blow out completely, or work very poorly. The left burners don't adjust well at all - they seem to have only High and Medium. This is not why I bought a gas stove. If I had to do it again I'd sacrifice my cabinet space above the stove and get a regular stove and overhead hood. On the plus side, the "melt" burner is great - I love that. The high-output burner takes forever to boil water, but it's fantastic for wok-cooking.
