This Kenmore Refrigerator 62042 is easy to clean. June 25, 2010

I've already written one three-star review ("Good for Saving Energy").  I thought I should add another review now that we have owned this refrigerator more than a year and a half. This time I am giving this little refrigerator 4 stars. It is still humming along. No problems really. Also, I just did my first thorough cleaning of the inside. My previous refrigerator had several glass shelves that tended to get dirty quickly and that encouraged me to clean the fridge every few months (or weeks). But I've gone more than a year and a half without cleaning this fridge. So maybe this fridge makes people really lazy! Actually, I think it just does not show dirt the way some fridges do. The enameled wire racks may seem cheezy compared to glass shelves, but they don't show dirt the same way.  So you can avoid cleaning it and nobody is likely to notice that you are becoming a slob as you grow older.

I am also impressed with how you can easily take out the clear plastic shelves/rails in the door to clean them and clean the door. These shelves/rails are made of thick and sturdy plastic. They seem unlikely to break or crack even if you drop them or drop a jar on them.

I also want to follow-up on a complaint that I made about this refrigerator in my other reviews. I said that the freezer door pops open if you slam the main door . That's true, so you learn maybe to be a little more gentle closing the door. I have also learned that you can buy special latches that fit on most any fridge to help keep the doors shut tightly. They only cost a few bucks. I haven't bought these latches yet. But I may do it yet. They seem like a good investment for saving energy, and possibly for keeping the stuff in your freezer from thawing out in a worst-case scenario.

Everything breaks on it, wouldn't buy again March 31, 2010

Just wanted a basic ref. with freezer on top.  What's happened to the dependable Kenmore products?  Plastic! Front door rack broke right after we got it, had to have a repair on the freezer one month later, the storage drawer railing broke and had to replace at $15.00 and now the top glass shelf "plastic" back holder is broken.  Will never buy another Kenmore! Very unhappy with this ref.  My Recommendation -  Buy a different brand.

Seal broke quickly and cost $90 to fix!! May 27, 2010
    via user
    By Tsubaki of Portland, OR

We've had the fridge for 3 years and the door seal has been busted for some time now. I ignored it at first but it's gotten worse and worse. We bought the fridge because it was Energy Star certified--but I'm sure we're wasting a lot of energy now since the door doesn't seal properly. When I called about having it fixed, they told me the replacement part would cost $90. I had no choice but to pay for it--but $90 for a rubber gasket?! It's not like it was a well made part, even, givent that the first one began to fall apart within a year or so! Highway robbery for substandard quality.

    Problematic December 08, 2009

I've owned this refrigerator for 4 years. Everything was OK (tho' it does cool unevenly- things in the back of the refrigerator will be frozen and things in the door shelves will barely be cool) until 6 months ago when the freezer started leaking copious amounts of water into the refrigerator. The repairman said the drain from the freezer was clogged and charged me $225 to fix it, and this with no replacement parts and less than an hour of his time. Now it is doing the same exact thing. Sears refuses to repair again at their expense and instead wants to sell me an extended warranty. I can only assume this will happen again and then I'll have to pay to repair it again. The customer service stinks and the product is faulty.
