A Good Upgrade from Basic Models July 06, 2007

My experience was a bit different than some others on this list, because my old grill bit the dust right before July 4th, and I had to go get a new grill quickly. Luckily for me, I had three things in my favor: I knew what features I wanted in a new grill, I had a new copy of CR available to check quality and other data on grills, and I was lucky enough to have to go buy a grill during the end of the season closeout sales. I wanted a grill that could handle more food than my old Coleman, as I was running up against size limits with my growing family. I wanted a better side burner than I had before, and I also wanted a better set of burners (the old pancake burners have to be replaced every couple of years, I've discovered). A bit more stainless steel would be nice, but not essential. After scouring CR for the latest grill data, I was surprised to find this grill made it to the top ranking above the Viking and the Weber Summit. Nevertheless, I was determined to check out the Weber Genesis and several other promising grills in this price range. I checked out the other grills, and some simply didn't feel quite right. The Weber was nice, but expensive and limited in size. This grill simply seemed to have the best fit for what I wanted. I got the grill home, built it on July 3rd, and test fired it for about a half an hour. The burners looked nice and even, with a steady blue flame, and the heat held well. Everything seemed to be in order. After a test grilling (naturally, you can't just test a grill without cooking something too), things seem completely shipshape. On the whole, I'm rather satisfied. I can't argue with CR rating this grill above the Summit based on their criteria, but I'm still not completely convinced that the Summit is the overall better grill. However, this time I'm going to listen to CR unlike the last time and found myself tempted by the Coleman a bit too much. Seriously, only time (probably a year from now) will truly tell on the worth of the grill, but I'm satisfied so far.

hassles along the way June 08, 2007

I bought this grill because I thought it was the best value for the price, features and quality and that was confirmed by consumer research. But beware you may be giving up service for getting that value. A natural gas conversion kit is not sold in the stores and has to be ordered separately (and costs another approximately $60). Recently, it was not available on the Sears website and had to be ordered through a service center and expected to arrive in 10 business days. Delivery times are arbitrary with no human apparently able to intervene to schedule because computers set the routes, so this makes delviery a hit or miss and the customer service is very bad on this front if the time given in the recorded phone call to your house is not convenient for you. When my grill finally arrived, the sideburner control was not functioning and this should have easily been caught during assembly (I took advantage of the free assembly). Now, the store tells me I have to return to the store for them to look at my original receipt in order for them to send out a replacement. Beware that value sometimes comes with a price. Maybe I'll like having this grill more as time goes by, but even if it grills well, it will leave a bad taste in my mouth for a while.

    Performs Great-Rotisserie Info December 11, 2007
    via bazaarvoice
    By HoustonGriller of Houston TX

I waited to review until I had many meals and hours of experience on the grill. Performance is excellent and convenient. Temperature control for all types of meat, fish, vegetables and bread works great. I had the same problems as others finding a rotisserie and found the Sears and Charbroil customer service providing mis-information. Finally, I tried the Charbroil Premium Universal Fit Electronic Rotisserie and it works great. It bolts on with no modifications or change of parts. This grill needs a high quality, strong rod and motor and this is it.

    DON'T Buy!! December 01, 2007
    via bazaarvoice
    By Anonymous of utica, ny

Bought this grilll this summer (5 months old) and already the ignitors are broken (4 out of 5). The over all quality is poor and does not cook evenly. It is flimsily built, the whole grill flexes when you have to move it around. You have to pull it by the work surfaces as there is no handle for this purpose and you feel like they will rip right off! No place to hang any of your grilling tools!! Go figure. Can't read the heat settings easily on knobs. Poorly thought out and light weight construction. Only worth HALF of what I paid for it. VERY displeased. Will not buy Sears again.

    BBQ October 22, 2007
    via bazaarvoice
    By Slowbrew of California

Indirect cooking is excellent. seems to get a little hotter to the rear than in front. Some of the knobs hit the screw head and make them resistant to turning smoothly. Recent winds pushed entire BBQ into my pool. Took it out and fired it up about an hour later. Worked like new. Im sold!!Happy to send a picture of the incident if Sears wants one.

CR Got it Wrong - is right!!! August 29, 2007
    via bazaarvoice
    By Anonymous of Enfield, CT

As another reviewer noted, Consumer Reports got the rating for this grill wrong! Here are my issues: 1. although the grill has a modern contemporary look out of the box, it doesn't take long for the elements to make it look old and tired. I even oiled it with WD-40 to protect it; the black side shelf doesn't hide spots well either. 2. There is no place to hang/store the grill utensils, what grill doesn't have its own utensils?? 3. The temperature gauge is completely inaccurate, measuring way too high. 4. You can't read the temperature control knobs. There is a lip in the design that blocks the writing on the knobs requiring the cook to lean over the heat to attempt to read the temperature setting. 5. The grill does not cook evenly I don't know what to say about this maybe it's the vertical burner layout, I don't know,,, 6. The cooking grids are hard to clean in between. The design has both vertical and horizontal grids that do not allow you to run the scraper along the whole grid without lifting over the horizontal grid maddening. I wish I bought the Weber.
