    The refrigerator is really nice. March 10, 2010

    I was reluctant to buy this refrigerator after reading the bad reviews.  I took the plunge in December of 2009.  It is now March 2010 and I have had no problems.  It is quiet.  Very spacious.  Well laid out.  My kids love the shaved ice.  The problem people complain about with leaking water is simple.  If you crush ice or used shaved ice, a little bit stays in the chute.  We clear it out with a push of regular cubes and have no problems.  If it is not cleared, next time you go to get ice, there is a little water that comes out.  Not a big deal if you are just getting water.  And the water tastes great with the filter.  We are drinking more water than ever.  I bought this unit based on all the amenities and I am super happy with it. We eat lots of fruit and the fruit bins in the door work excellent.  It keeps the fruit clean and on the ready for my family to snack on.  The doors are deep and we have plenty of room for all of our condiments.  Overall, I am very pleased.  And it looks so nice in our kitchen.  I really like the modern led display also.  Again, I am very happy with my purchase.

    ice dispenser is cheap junk November 05, 2009

    I purchased a model 58966 in July of 2008.  The ice dispenser funnel on the outside of the door has now broken for the third time.  It broke in March of 2009 (8 months).  It broke a second time in June of 2009 (3 months).  It broke the third time in November 2009 (5 months).  Now that it is out of warranty, they want me to pay to have it repaired.  So far I have been on the phone 50 minutes with them and have spoken to 3 people and they all think I need to pay for the repair. If this  can't be resolved over a $10 part, Sears has lost my business.  Appliance, tools and electronics, etc.

    Plastic pieces break off

    I must admit, I always took my refrigerator for granted.  I basically thought they were all the same except for the storage features.  This refrigerator has taught me differently.  I believe we bought a premium refrigerator and the result is 2 drawers that don't work properly because of plastic pieces breaking and an outlay every few months of $35 or more for filters.  I would NEVER recommend this refrigerator.

    We love the fridge . it has sooo much room and so many storage bins. we love the black, it looks so elegant. the ice maker is a different design from we have had in the past, it is not perfect, the ice does freeze together and ball up because the stir rod doesnt reach far enough to the right side of the bin. it does make some noise when it stirs occasionally and when it drops ice into the bin it is somewhat loud. when filling your cup with ice just hold your glass up high in the door dispenser and hold it there a couple of seconds after you release the dispenser button otherwise some ice does tend to go on the floor. we have had the unit since january 2010 and have been very happy with it except for the minor icemaker flaws, not that big of a deal.

    Kemore Refrigerator freezer #54789 - bad Icemaker. January 25, 2011

    I purchased a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator / freezer (Model 54789) in July 2009. The unit arrived with scratched doors. Sears sent new doors and a service tech was sent to replace the doors with the new ones. Only problem, of the 4 sets of doors received during the next 5 months, all were scratched in shipment. We finally settled for the "least scratched" ones to install. During the installation of the doors, the Service Tech told us we would have problems with the icemaker within the year. Several door icemakers of this type had problems per his experience. He missed it by one month. In August 2010, the ice delivery motor for the icemaker has quite working. When I called Sears Service group, their reply is that I will have to pay for the repair since the unit is past the warranty of one year. Note: This icemaker has been used very little since there are only two of us in the house and no children to cause extra use. I have owned other Whirlpool (Kenmore) products in the past with ice makers that lasted for about 20 years. To have a COSTLY Ref/Freezer like this on go out with any part in less than 5 years is not a very well designed product. With the other reviews I have read on this unit, there are major flaws with this icemaker. Another complaint is the clumping of the ice into a solid ball. The ice stir rod does not keep the ice loose in the basket - another bad design. Overall, the refrigerator and the freezer parts of the unit have performed well; however, the icemaker is another issue. Until the design of the accessory is corrected, I would not recommend buying this type of refrigerator/freezer. At this time, I will not be purchasing any more Kenmore products. Disatisfied with the Kenmore Product.

    We've pretty much always had Kenmore refers.  Generally they've been reliable, offered convieniences, and are qualtiy.  We've been using this one for 4 mos. now.  We like it.   Nice flexibility in storage.  Handsome.  Excellent lighting inside.  Better use of space than our larger Kenmore this one replaced.  I put temperature probes in it to check steadyness of the thermostat - very good.  The air distrubution is quite good.  We don't end up with zones where food freezes.

    Issues: Ice cubes end up all over freezer and its dispenser has problems getting the ice into your glass.  It is somewhat noisy.  Hums, buzzes, and whirrs.   Delivery:  First refer. was damaged moving it in.  Second one the refer was fine, but the door frame and new JennAir brushed aluminum oven handles were scraped (no recourse).  Maybe I'll make a damages form they must sign before they come into my house next time!
