I really like this range so far! December 30, 2009

I got this range in NOvember, 2009 and love it so far.  I really like the triple settings for the front right burner. I can adjust it to fit my pot and not waste electricity with an oversized burner for the size of the pot. It does take a bit for things to heat up, but once they are heated....they stay hot and I find I don't have to turn the burners up nearly as high as I used to on my old conventional range burners. I love the warming oven also as I can raise bread dough in it quickly and also keep things warm till I can serve them. Works great on keeping apple pie warm until serving time and placing that scoop of vanilla ice cream on it! When I got my oven it came with streaks in between the glass on the door.  I called and a repairman came right out. However, when he came he discovered that the hinges on my door had been bent, so he has ordered new ones and we are waiting on that to come in and then the repairman will return to fix the door and clean it. He told me that more than likely I would spill something in between the glass in the door someday and need to clean it myself, so he would show me how ehen he returns to install the new hinges. I don't mind having to do that myself, so long as I can keep it clean.  As of right now, I would definitely recommend this range to others. Time will tell if I am right about it. I did purchase an extended warranty because of all the electronic/computerized parts to this range.  All I hope is that they will always have parts to repair it with as I don't plan on buying another range for many, many, many years! I LOVE the size of the oven on it. Lots of room to bake multiple items at once and the convection part works wonderfully well!! Everything bakes evenly and quickly for me. So far, so good on this one for me. I'd give it 5 stars, but haven't had it long enough yet to do that.

Oven door gets dangerously hot. March 18, 2010

We purchased this range in January along with 3 other Kenmore elite appliances.  It took some getting used to, since I had an electric range with exposed coils for more than 30 years.  I do like the triple element because I can choose the size to fit my pot.  However, having both large elements in the front makes it very difficult to actually use 2 large pots at the same time.  They should have been diagonal from each other.  But then I guess there wouldn't be room for the warming element, which I have used several times.  However, I would rather have not had the warming element and had the large elements on the diagonal.

I do like the overall look of the range (I have the stainless steel model), however, the metal on the oven door gets dangerously hot.  So much so, that I called the repairman.  Also, I do not use the warming drawer as such.  I store my pot lids in it.  After the oven has been on for an hour or more, the lids are so hot that I cannot pick them up with my bare hands.  I was afraid that the oven had not been insulated properly as the temperature of the whole kitchen increased dramatically.  The repairman told me that they are not insulated at all to keep the heat in.  He is aware that the oven door gets hot and even the edge of the cooktop gets hot from the oven when the cooktop is not in use.  He told me that he cautions elderly customers about this.   I am also concerned that the excessive heat will damage my hardwood floors underneath the range.  The rapairman had no solution to these concerns.

As I stated previously, we purchased a microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator at the same time.  In comparing the stainless steel on all of the appliances, the range appears as though they just stuck a sheet of stainless steel on it and bent the edges to form a door.  It is rather rough and sharp where the stainless ends.  Also, the vents on the oven door are a hazard.  They also are sharp, and a person could easily catch a finger or fingernail in them when they are opening the door or hanging the dish towel on the handle (which is where I keep mine).  The stainless on the other 3 appliances is very nice and appears as though it is part of the appliance, not an afterthought.  The stainless on the other 3 is also very smooth and rounded on the corners.

The repairman also cautioned me that I will need to adjust all of my baking times for the regular bake (not convection) because of the hidden element in the oven!  I was never told that by the salespeople!

We did buy extended warranties because of all of the electronics, but that doesn't help with poor design!!

    lots of cooking options
    Cons:
cheaply built warming drawer, smooth glass cooktop

Bottom warming drawer is a cheap piece  of junk, very flimsy.  The cooking surface is too smooth and easily scratches and always looks dirty.

    Cons:
    Problems with stainless steel

Unless you are extremely good with technology, or have plenty of time to read the manuel, this isn't the best one to get. There are way too many things to learn. I have no idea why I bought this range! If they had a class for it maybe I would understand how to cook on it! I don't like the new black tops because it shows everything. Wish they would bring back the gray tops.

Kenmore Elite range has features that are worth the higher price August 16, 2010

I almost never write these but wanted anyone thinking about this stove to know our experience(s). I would buy another of these stoves (even at $1600!) in a heartbeat.

We have cooked bisquits while the oven pre-heats to 400 degrees, turned the oven off for a few minutes and then cooked a small lamb roast with the oven off and using just the residual heat. All this time the oven is cool to the touch on the outside.

I cannot think of one thing wrong with this stove, but then I do not boil water on the back burner (why when the front boils in a minute?) and try not to slop food all over the place. The person whose stove is hot had better get Sears out and find a repair person who knows what they are doing. Mine runs cool and this could be a serious problem.

This thing was expensive, but worth evey penny.

    Hope this helps potential buyers

Absolute Gem! Easy to use and clean. August 08, 2010

This is the best range I have ever owned. I purchased it for my wife about a year ago, and she loves it. At first she was apprehensive about the electronic controls, but now that she has learned how they work she would not trade it for anything else. We both tend to be sloppy cooks, and have both burned food and melted plastic on the cooktop, but after simply soaking the surface with soapy water then scrubbing it with the stove top cleaner the Sears salesman recommended it looks like new (some scraping with a razor blade was necessary on the plastic however). The hot surface indicators help avoid most incidents, and the lockout function helps keep the controls clean. The TURBO burner makes boiling water quick and easy. The extra warming burner is great for sauces and gravy, plus the warming drawer is super for rolls and holding casseroles until other items are done. The extremely large convection oven is wonderful, and easily visible with lots of light and large viewing area. The only draw back is that spills can enter the vent ports on the front of the oven door causing a problem for cleaning the viewing window, which can be avoided with care. The brite light of the blue LED controls does not seem to be an issue as mentioned with other reviews. Ours is located in a dark kitchen away from any windows, so I would think it would be noticable. Perhaps they fixed it!
