    HE5 Elite Gas Dryer May 07, 2007

    I purchased the dryer as part of a set in March 07. Its drying capability is excellent. However, when I first started using it, I was not told it has two latches that need to click either separately or together so the light will go off and stay off or the dryer will not function. I thought I had to slam the door. It took having a service person out to tell me how to shut the door. Quite embarassing. By the way I needed to have two pedastals with drawer reordered because they did not fit properly under the dryer. It appears that problem has been corrected, however, the shelf still is not sitting in the drawer correctly. After two times of taking the dryer off and on the pedastal, I decided I would live with it for now.

    Would Be Terrific If It Actually Worked May 15, 2007

    This dryer (and the matching HE5t washer) were delivered and installed on March 30th of this year. The washer is terrific and works just fine. The dryer, however, will not shut off when the clothes are dry -- it keeps running beyond the point of dryness for an hour or more, until the clothes are nearly scorched. This is not good for the clothes nor for our gas bill. Sears has been unable to fix this problem in two visits, and a third visit has had to be postponed because a part ordered three weeks ago has still not arrived. (I'm not convinced that this part will sovle the problem, but there's no way to be sure.) We are at the point of returning this unit under the 90-day Satisfaction Guarantee. Having said that, the unit has many nice features and we would be very happy to own it -- if it worked. However, when the very basic function of turning off automatically when the clothes are dry does not work, it is hard to justify spending more than $1,000 on the unit. The last technician who came to service it suggested that we just use the manual (timed) drying cycle -- but we didn't spend this money just to do that. Part of the problem seems to be that this unit is so new that the service techs have little experience with them. Hopefully that situation will improve someday. Meanwhile, six weeks after purchasing this unit we still have to monitor it and stop the dryer manually to avoid damaging our clothes. Be warned -- technology is only wonderful when it works.

    It looks great, is quiet, easy to use, alot of features. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Recommend getting the pedestal base, you won't regret it.

    We purchased this drier with matching washing machine 7/06. Performance has been great. We had some problems with venting and installation - seems rather basic for such an otherwise state of the art machine, but with a 2nd trip from Sears delivery it was corrected. Machine has worked great since, relatively quiet for such a big drier and definitely can handle large loads.
