Not bad for the money...I hope March 07, 2011

We've had a fully-automatic Capresso for a few years and when that quit working we searched for a cheaper alternative. This machine may be it, but we'll see.

So far, we've had it about 24 hours and have made 4 pots of coffee. The taste is okay, although it seems the water is almost too hot (or maybe the warming plate is too hot?) and the coffee tastes a little bitter.

I LOVE the fact that I can program it and I will have a fresh ground, fresh brewed cuppa ready to go in the AM. However, this dude is loud, so if you like to wake up to fresh coffee in the morning, you probably won't have to set an alarm. The first time this started up at 6:30AM on the weekend it just about sent everyone in the house into cardiac arrest it was so loud. Nonetheless, it does most of the work, so I can't complain.

    Pros:

    • Programmable.
    • Bypass - so you can either brew from freshly ground beans, or use a different pre-ground coffee.
    • Prompts you for basic cleaning functions.
    • Charcoal Filter.
    • Conical Burr grinder.
    • Holds up to 1/2 lb. of coffee beans.
    • Smaller footprint than a fully-automatic Capresso (and much cheaper!).

    Cons:

    • No separate control for the warming plate - you get up to 2 hours to keep your pot warm, then it shuts off. If you turn it back on, you will activate the water heater and the pump too, so it will think you are trying to make a new pot of coffee.
    • You can't fill up the water reservoir and leave it as the machine pumps whatever amount of water is in the reservoir, so you can only dump in what you intend to use per pot. For example, you can't put 12 cups of water in the reservoir and then make three separate pots of 4 cups each - it will use all 12 cups of water for the initial pot, even though you've programmed it to grind enough for 4 cups. Maybe not a big deal for most folks, it's just that we were accustomed to filling up the reservoir on our Capresso and not worrying about refilling it again until the water ran out - not a big deal, but would have been a nice feature.

We purchased the machine on sale and were swayed considerably by the 5-year warranty. However, there was no warranty paperwork in the box, so now I'm worried that the warranty is worthless. We'll contact customer service to figure this out - if it lasts the 5 years, it will be well worth the expense.

One final note - any batch of oily beans in pretty much any grinder on the market will run the risk of sticking or clogging the grinder, so the fact that it happens on this machine is no surprise and not necessarily a reflection of the quality of the machine. Regular maintenance and clearing the grinder - on a weekly basis - is essential.

    A huge FAIL!!!! April 16, 2011

If I could give this a MINUS 5 stars, I would, In the last 6 konths, we have had 3! Yes, 3! With the first one, it would not even turn on. With the second, it would grind, but it would not brew. We thought that since it was a Kenmore ELITE, we just had some bad luck. The 3rd one lasted less than 4 months! I had an old Cuisinart Grind 'N Brew which was still working after 6 years, but getting so old I had decided to replace it. Guess what? I am going back to a Cuisinart.

We loved the coffee maker until now. April 17, 2012
    via Sears.com
    By smhanson of Noblesville, IN

We have had the coffee maker since Christmas and have enjoyed the ease of making coffee and have been satisfied with the flavor (really depends of the coffee). But this morning it quit dispensing the water. It grinds the coffee but no water. There are no troubleshooting guidelines. The return for warranty work is painful since this was a gift. We will be without a coffee maker, once we get it to the service center, until they fix it--they will not replace it. Although we have bought several Kenmore applicances in the past, this will be my last 'small applicance' from Kenmore.

When you consider the basic process for making coffee, which is to introduce ground coffee beans to boiling water, this is one of the coffee makers that are a marvel of convenience. You don?t have to guess when filling the reservoir because it reveals the water level. It filters the water to improve flavor and reduce scale deposits. It has the power output to brew quickly and hot as well as a strength setting to increase flavor extraction. This one of the coffee makers that use paper filters or the basket filter. You can program it in advance to brew at a time of your choosing. If you want to pour a cup before the brew cycle is complete, it lets you quickly sneak one without spilling. And then it shuts itself down based on your time preference. And as if these features were not compelling enough, the grinder is great

Best Grind & Brew ever!!! April 09, 2012
    via Community Review
    By betcie of Saline, MI

We have had several grind and brew makers. Even more expensive then this one and by far this is the best we've had. The past 2 high end models we had both died after a year, actually one caught fire!. We have had this one for over a year and still going strong. The only complaint is the the oily beans do not feed in very well. I love to program it and wake up to freshly ground piping hot coffee in the morning. After experimenting with the grind setting we've found the perfect match for our tastes. You do need to clean out the grinder now and then with the brush but other than that it has been so far maintenance free. Big thumbs up for this one!

OUTSTANDING Coffee Maker!!!! March 10, 2012
    via Sears.com
    By turtle0567 of Milwaukee, WI

We have had this coffee maker for a month now. We have enjoyed our POTS of coffee in the morning. You must read the instructions fully! Re-read them again, AND, re-read them again. I've read where people have had "trouble" with this coffee maker and I understand where they may have misunderstood them. The ONLY thing I have against this coffee maker is that it IS loud in the morning. I know that ANY grinder in the morning is loud. So, upon that assumption, we use it kind of like a back-up alarm after our bedroom alarm has gone off....after hitting the snooze button. I have noticed that the grinder associated in this coffee maker is called a "burr" grinder, which to us is a "better" grinder than our old black & decker "blade" grinder. The taste is sooo exceptional. In the past, I only had around 6-8 cups. Now, I can drink a whole pot and then some! We also have tried 8 o'clock and Hills Brothers brand coffee beans. There is a difference in size between the 2 beans so I have experimented with the grind selector to find the right one for us. All in all, a GREAT tasting POTS of coffee.
