    Pros:
    filters all but Hex-6,excellent tasting water,the best of the filters for this system,totally worth the extra $$

    1/2 the flow rate as other inserts

    I have been using this dual Sears/Kenmore filtration system for about 5 years. It is fantastic. I have tried all other brands (like 15 other brands) and this is the one I ended up with. I live in Alexandria, VA and have city water so it is clean except for chlorine (and deadly Hex-6 (the Erin Brokovitch poison) but only a reverse osmosis takes that out and I live in a condo). This filter is the top of the line for the system. It gives a noticeable difference compared to the other filters available. The only problem is the water flow rate is 1/2 of the other filters so be ready for this. I wish this filter took out Hex-6 but none do. Only reverse osmosis as I said. There are NO good under sink reverse osmosis units under $800 available. If you live in a house, get a $5,000 reverse osmosis unit -- it's worth it for your family. If you cant afford or live in a condo/apt, get this system and these filters.

    I bought this unit when our larger undersink carbon block filter finally cracked its housing after nearly 20 yrs. Replacing the original unit wasn't an option due to cost. This unit is a smaller version of what we had & is much, much more affordable. If you already do any odd jobs around the house, installation should be a snap. If you're not familiar with basic home maintenance, hire a local plumber to do the install. This unit simply swapped in place of our old unit with a tubing size reduction & two screws to mount it to the undersink cabinet wall. (The old unit was so big it had to sit on the floor under the sink!) I recommend using only the "Lead/Taste & Odor" filter cartridge (#04234377000) if you plan on using this for drinking water. You'll get the best results by far with this cartridge. One tip for replacing the cartridge: Get the special filter housing wrench & save yourself a lot cussing when it's time to change it!

    Best Filter Cartridge We've Used August 03, 2007

    We've had our water filtered since 1983. We have this filter outside on a hardwater line ONLY for added drinking water (besides purchased spring water)& also for water used in cooking and & for pets. The first cartridges (for water consumption) we used years ago were mainly to remove chlorine, bad taste, & odor. When we found the better cartridge we chose it over the simpler types..so began buying what is sold now as the 16.99 type. Eventually we began using this more expensive cartridge. We decided to stay with this one ...as it does help filter out infections & lead also besides chlorine & other chemicals. The flow constricter is a bother, but it is in place to get slower, better filtering. When water runs fast thru a cartridge..there is less filtering. This 0.5 micron cartridge is the best we've found. For those who put this on a sink line or whole house line..it will indeed create some problems with water pressure..due to the flow constrictor. We only face the low pressure at this filter... since this is on an outside drinking water faucet, and we make sure to not waste water (those 1,000 gallons) thru this filter. We also keep a very good quality sediment filter (Sears) cartridge on the whole house line...which has a water softener too. We do NOT drink soft water...b/c soft water is very unhealthy...especially for the thyroid, prostate, kidneys, breasts, etc..as soft water DEPLETES the body of zinc. This filter cartridge is certainly NOT cheap...but IS the BEST for filtering drinking & cooking water on the separate (hard water) line my dad put outside for me in 1983. Dad put Sears Filter Housings on this drinking water line...and one on the whole house line...so we have a total of 2 sites where our water is filtered. Our drinking/cooking hard water...is double filtered...first thru the sediment filter cartridge on the main line ...then through this excellent highest quality filter cartridge Sears sells for our filter housing. 1st the hard water comes thru our main line sediment filter...travels towards my drinking/cooking filter (which is ahead of the softener)...then on to the softener. When we turn on our drinking filter...(which is ahead of the softener)...the water has aleady been filtered of sediment...so is being SLOWLY filtered again as this is an excellent filter cartridge. My sweet dad replaced my Sears filter housings in 1999 before he died. I highly recommend this cartridge for drinking water.
