    The PlasmaWave does clean the air! May 11, 2011

    After owning the Kenmore PlasmaWave (small room) for about 6 months now I can safely say I am overall happy with the product. After putting it in my bedroom I was able to notice a difference, and was actually able to breath in my own room again. I'm not a dirty person, and I try to clean often, but because of the amount of time I spend in my room dust has always been an issue.

    When I purchased the air purifier, I did some research as to what I want and how others rated it. I finally settled on this one for the True Hepa Filter, and the Automatic speed based on the cleaness of the air. After about 1 month of use, I wasn't very impressed with the dust levels, as I did not notice much of a difference, so I decided to manually leave the fan on high. About 2 months later I was able to notice the difference in dust levels, and it was time to change the pre-filter (carbon filter), which was coated in a layer of dust which was a sure sign to me it was working. I would have to say that the auto feature is good, but it doesn't throughly clean the air for dust, as I was hoping. Also finding filter replacements (pre-filter change once every three months, and the Hepa filter once every six months) proved to be a little challanging, and actually kind of costly. If the filters weren't so expensive I'd give it a 5-star rating. If your looking for a good air purifier, then this is the one, just beware of the auto speed, and the cost of the replacement filters.

    Works but makes odd sounds during use January 31, 2011

    This unit makes a couple strange sounds that may bother people when used while sleeping. I assume it is the "PlasmaWave" technology that makes an odd almost "buzzing" like sound. In a quiet bedroom the "buzz" was considerably noticeable. Also, the fan speed goes up and down making a groaning like noise as it increases and decreases. The inconsistent fan speed was very noticeable on quiet, medium, and high settings. At first, I thought these noises were a defect and I took the first unit back for an exchange. There is no mention of any odd noises in the user guide. The second unit makes the same noises so I can only assume this is "normal" operation. If you like to sleep with the consistent white noise of a fan, I cannot recommend this air cleaner. If a little "buzzing" and "groaning" of an inconsistent fan doesn't bother you, then you may love it.

    I was tired of the cheap $30 air filters and how noisy they were. This is extremely powerful and does a much nicer job filtering. I am very pleased with this product.

    I have this in my kitchen, and it does a great job of keeping the usual kitchen odors down. I just wish the filters were a little more affordable.

    Had this a couple days now and have found it quite impressive.  It is on auto and stays in quiet mode most of the time (and when the lights are out--that is a great feature).  Quiet mode is 'is-that-thing-even-on?' quiet--practically silent.  On the next higher speed, it is still quieter than the fan on the laptop.

    One important note about the plasmawave function--this makes a very obnoxious electrical buzz.  To me it is the sound of a disc drive spinning and whizzing.  If I hadn't figured out how to turn it off I probably would have taken this back--my wife didn't mind and thought she could learn to tune it out, but I found it very annoying.  Anyway, it is undocumented anywhere I have found, but you CAN turn it off.  All you have to do is hold down the other two buttons (auto and fan speed) when you power it on.  You should hear the plasmawave come on at first and then immediately switch itself off.  I knew the on/off functionality had to be there since it is on other models (the original Winix model with a remote button). Quick trial and error was all it took.  Hopefully this is useful to other owners/potential buyers.  It may be possible to do the same with the Winix models as well as the larger Kenmore versions--I would bet it is.

    I would give 5 stars, but I find the replacement filters to be a bit pricey.

    Pros:
    Really cleans air,Quiet,Powerful

    I was skeptical about air cleaners and had used two other brands before I tried the Kenmore Plasma wave in my bedroom. It made all the difference in my breathing and the way I felt in the mornings. I bought a smaller one for another bedroom and will probably get another for the family room. They are low maintenance and do not require a constant changing of filters. While it is near impossible to hide them, they are attractive, quiet, and quickly become part of the room. I am now a believer!
